Experimental Observation of Topological Edge States at the Surface Step Edge of the Topological Insulator<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>ZrTe</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn>5</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math>
We report an atomic-scale characterization of ${\mathrm{ZrTe}}_{5}$ by using scanning tunneling microscopy. We observe a bulk band gap of $\ensuremath{\sim}80\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{meV}$ with topological edge states at the step edge and, thus, demonstrate that ${\mathrm{ZrTe}}_{5}$ is a two-dimensional topological insulator.
