Crystalline Electric-Field Randomness in the Triangular Lattice Spin-Liquid <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msub><mml:mrow><mml:mi>YbMgGaO</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mn>4</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:mrow></mml:math>
We apply moderate-high-energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements to investigate ${\mathrm{Yb}}^{3+}$ crystalline electric field (CEF) levels in the triangular spin-liquid candidate ${\mathrm{YbMgGaO}}_{4}$. Three CEF excitations from the ground-state Kramers doublet are centered at the energies $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}=39$, 61, and 97 meV in agreement with the effective spin-$1/2$ $g$ factors and experimental …
