Particle Production in Strong Electromagnetic Fields in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions
I review the origin and properties of electromagnetic fields produced in heavy-ion collisions. The field strength immediately after a collision is proportional to the collision energy and reaches ~<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M1"><mml:mrow><mml:msubsup><mml:mi>m</mml:mi><mml:mi>π</mml:mi><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msubsup></mml:mrow></mml:math>at RHIC and ~<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" id="M2"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>10</mml:mn><mml:msubsup><mml:mi>m</mml:mi><mml:mi>π</mml:mi><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msubsup></mml:mrow></mml:math>at LHC. I demonstrate by explicit analytical calculation that after dropping by about one-two orders …
