T. in 1974, with a thesis in analytic number theory under the direction of H. M. Stark. Since that time he has worked for Bell Laboratories, AT&T Bell Laboratories and, from 1995, AT&T Labs-Research. He has also taught at the University of Maryland (mathematics) and Rutgers University (computer science). Besides number theory, his current mathematical interests include computational complexity theory, discrete geometry, harmonic analysis, and low dimensional topology.
