In this paper we study the distribution of the number of ’s in the interval (n,n + t], 1 n p, where t p/’ (p 1) and is a positive constant. We show that if ’(p 1)/p is small then the distribution is approximately that of a Poisson variable with parameter . Next we consider the proportion of dierences i+1 i which are at least times greater than the average, that is, (1) gp( ) = #{i : 1 i ’(p 1), i+1 i p/’ (p 1)} ’(p 1)
