The study was conducted in one semester with 19 student teachers taking a writing course on argumentative texts, in the English Department at a state university in West Java, Indonesia. The texts in focus were Exposition, Discussion and Response to Literary Works, but in the interests of space, the article will centre around Exposition. The study used a qualitative case study research design with data collected from participant observations for 16 meetings, analysis of students’ texts collected over the program, and questionnaires distributed at the conclusion of the program. The results indicate that despite some aspects that still need improvement, SFL GP can generally help students develop their writing ability. Observation data show students’ writing skill improvement supported by students’ texts which depicts good control of the schematic structure and linguistic features of the texts in focus. Finally, questionnaire data reveal students’ consciousness of improved writing skill and positive responses to each activity in the program. Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that SFL GP be implemented in other contexts in Indonesia and other countries.

Many criticisms for the theories also show that intelectuals are more interested in this field leading to make discourse analysis as a multidisciplinary study. Based on this ground, Norman Fairclough seeks to reconstruct discourse theory as a criticism to the existing theories, which tends to be side-emphasis and partial on the basis of their own discipline. Combining three traditions, i.e. linguistic, interpretative, and sociological traditions, he offers a discourse model integrating three dimensions: text, discourse practice, and social practice. Each dimension has its area, process, and analysis model, in which all of them dialectically connect to one another. In addition, Fairclough also formulates another important concept, namely intertextuality, which affirms the interrelation of various texts and discourses to a text. This concept will also create ideological effect of structuration and restructuration of the prevalent discourse order. When power and ideology embed in a discourse, intertextuality will function as a mechanism for maintaining and changing the domination relation.

Buku ini terdiri dari 9 Bab, yang diawali dengan Bab I, What is Corpus Linguistics?

Based on the current curriculum, character building should be promoted as one of the learning goals. This effort is to maintain and strengthen students’ cultural roots and identity in this globalized world. The integration of local culture in the textbooks will help to provide exposures of both cultures and facilitate cultural dissemination of both local and global values. The result of content analysis on 36 English textbooks used in elementary schools to senior high schools in Indonesia shows how the spoken and written texts accommodate the promotion of Indonesian local cultures, particularly the local culinary. The texts mention the names of several local foods and beverages from Indonesia, such as nasi goreng, bakmi, soto, gudeg, rica-rica, klepon, and es palu butung. Based on the questionnaire results, the representation of local culinary in the textbooks can promote local identity, disseminate culture, and promote local tourism. However, the integration is still considered insufficient to disseminate the culture and promote local identity because the books have not accommodated all cultural elements in Indonesia.

The background of this research is the increasing demand for Mandarin proficiency in Indonesia, following the growing bilateral relations between Indonesia and China and the increasing career opportunities requiring Mandarin skills. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method, where data is collected through questionnaires distributed to non-Chinese students. The results show that most students have high motivation to learn Mandarin, particularly instrumental motivation related to career opportunities. However, the main difficulties they face lie in writing and speaking skills, which are caused by the structural differences between Mandarin and Indonesian, as well as limited opportunities to practice outside the school environment. Additionally, there is an indication of a gap between students' high motivation and their actual ability to overcome linguistic barriers. The Pearson correlation test results show a weak and insignificant positive relationship between motivation and learning difficulties. Based on these findings, it is suggested that a more contextual and communicative learning approach should be applied to address the learning difficulties faced by students and improve their Mandarin language skills.

Students have been vocal about respective disappointment with Chinese language classes and textbooks in recent years, including the lack of motivation. Student learning quality diminishes when only a single teaching method is employed. Therefore, teachers should reappraise the curriculum design to emphasise developing personal learning abilities among students for higher classroom engagement. Teachers should redefine the concept of self-directed learning by expanding the definition of self-sustaining student learning behaviour outside classrooms before altering the existing approach to classroom learning. Although PBL remains in the early stages of CLC curriculum design, the problem-based learning (PBL) method could assist in addressing the Chinese language classroom (CLC) learning issues. The current study examined the PBL approach in CLCs and developed a framework for educating a Chinese language unit to second-year students in a Malaysian private high school. In addition, this study provided the Malaysian government with a strategic recommendation for improving the primary school curriculum.

In today’s global marketplace, advertisements function not only as persuasive linguistic tools but also as cultural products that reflect and shape social values. Therefore, translating advertisements requires more than linguistic accuracy—it demands a deep understanding of both source and target cultures. Using a qualitative approach and drawing on theories such as dynamic equivalence and cultural translation, this research analyzes English advertisements and their translations across diverse cultural contexts. The analysis focuses on cultural dimensions such as communication context (high vs. low), individualism vs. collectivism, and power distance. The Findings indicate that cultural aspects such as phrases, humor, and a local symbol often can not be translated directly. Therefore, strategies like adaptation, localization, and cultural substitutions are used to keep the relevance and appeal of the message. This research affirms that the translator's function as a cultural mediator who must consider both the meaning and the sensitivity of the target audience. This Study also emphasizes the importance of cultural competence and collaboration with cultural consultants or native speakers to guarantee the accuracy and cross-cultural respect. This study investigates the role of YouTube as a supportive tool for learning English vocabulary among EFL students at Moulay Ismail University. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative data from an online questionnaire with qualitative insights drawn from open-ended responses. The study involved 193 EFL students selected through purposive sampling. The findings reveal that a significant number of students frequently use YouTube to enhance their vocabulary, favoring informal and context-rich content such as vlogs, entertainment clips, and subtitled videos. Learners engage actively with the platform by pausing, taking notes, interacting with comment sections, demonstrating strategic and autonomous learning behaviors. Students also report high levels of motivation and ease in accessing suitable content, underscoring YouTube’s potential as an engaging and learner-centered resource. While the study highlights the educational value of YouTube in vocabulary learning, it also identifies notable challenges. These include distractions, unreliable subtitles, and a lack of structured guidance, which may hinder consistent progress. Furthermore, the research is limited by its reliance on self-reported data and the narrow focus on EFL students from a single institution, which may affect the generalizability of the results. The study offers several implications for educators and curriculum designers, suggesting the integration of well-selected YouTube content into language instruction to support learner autonomy and engagement. Future research should explore broader populations and assess the long-term impact of video-based learning on vocabulary development. Overall, the findings affirm YouTube’s relevance as a dynamic and accessible platform for enhancing vocabulary learning in EFL contexts.

This research addresses a pressing issue in contemporary society - performance anxiety - characterised by heavy reliance on technology and diminished verbal communication skills. The study employs a mixed methodology: students completed questionnaires before and after participating in activities based on VT in English four classes to provide information about their backgrounds, interests and fears along with changes in their point of view about doing oral presentations. In addition, emotional metres, inspired by Brackett’s (2020) version, were filled by students to track their levels of energy and pleasantness during the activities. The analysis of the questionnaires and metres facilitated understanding the emotions experienced by students when speaking English in public, specifically delivering oral presentations in the ESL classroom. Results reveal that visual texts indeed facilitate students’ comfort in public speaking experiences, consequently leading to enhanced practice and proficiency in communicative skills. In conclusion, the participation in the lessons framed in VT contributed to students’ improvement in their emotional well-being at the same time that they improved their oral skills. Keywords: Visual Thinking (VT), stage fright, emotional competences, English as a Second Language (ESL), primary education.

It focuses on identifying the types, forms, causes, functions, and impacts of code mixing in classroom activities. Data were gathered through observation and teacher questionnaires. Findings show various forms of code mixing, including word, phrase, clause, baster, and repeated word insertions. Both inward and outward code mixing types were observed. Factors contributing to code mixing include urgency, second-party influence, emphasis, habitual relaxed communication, and speaker duality. Functionally, code mixing helps clarify meaning, fosters familiarity, maintains communication, and strengthens local cultural identity. It is used to create a more relaxed and engaging learning environment, encouraging student participation and improving comprehension. However, it also poses a risk to students’ proficiency in standard Indonesian, as they may become too reliant on regional language. Despite this drawback, the overall impact of code mixing in this context is largely positive, enhancing student understanding and classroom interaction.

It analyzes how these authors use inventive language strategies to construct immersive fictional worlds and convey thematic depth. Rowling’s approach is characterized by playful neologisms, blends, and derivations that enhance the whimsical yet socially nuanced world of Harry Potter. In contrast, Lewis relies on archaisms, classical borrowings, and semantic shifts to reinforce the allegorical and theological underpinnings of Narnia. The study offers a comparative analysis of their linguistic choices, examining the narrative, phonological, and cultural functions of new and repurposed words. It argues that both authors use lexical innovation not merely for stylistic effect but as a core tool for world-building, symbolism, and reader engagement. The article contributes to broader discussions in literary linguistics, fantasy studies, and the intersection of language and narrative.
