Consumption and use are equally essential components of the innovation process. Technological innovation is also not just a matter of engineering. Both new and old technologies are social products: they are symbolic and aesthetic as well as material and functional. Production and consumption are not related to each other in a singular or linear fashion, but are the product of a complex pattern of activities in which producers and consumer-users, as well as those who intervene in and facilitate the process of consumption, take part.

In this paper the results for the 1986 survey are compared. One of the most striking results of that year's survey is the emphasis some of the more advanced manufacturers put on their efforts to overcome the trade‐off between flexibility and cost efficiency. In particular for the Japanese respondents these attempts become clear. Europeans and North Americans are not yet seizing the opportunity to cut costs through rapid production and design changes, and are focusing more on traditional cost reduction programmes and the improvement of quality. This might mean that they are preparing the basis on which they can built to obtain added value from flexible automation. If this is the case then the Japanese are clearly ahead.

The empirical analysis is based on a unique longitudinal firm-level data set, which matches the Italian Community Innovation Survey (CIS II) data (1993–1995) and a set of economic indicators provided by the Italian System of Enterprise Account (1993–1998). In particular the empirical analysis aims at assessing whether the presence of innovation and the amount of resources devoted to innovation are able to explain the economic performance of firms in the service sector. The results presented show that innovating firms out perform non-innovating firms in terms of productivity levels and economic growth. Productivity is also found to be linked to the amount of innovation expenditures, especially those devoted to the acquisition and internal development of new software.

Technological change does play a role in services: around one third of service firms have introduced a technological innovation in the period 1993–95. Process innovation, innovative investment and the acquisition and internal development of software represent the most important channels through which service firms innovate. R&D activities represent an important innovation source only for a small number of science and technology-based service industries. The sectoral analysis highlights the variety of innovative patterns, which should discourage any simple generalization about innovation in services. Accordingly, a sectoral taxonomy is proposed in which service industries are clustered according to the overall innovative performance of firms, the nature of the innovation activities carried out, the different knowledge bases underlying the innovation processes, and the different patterns of interaction through which service firms innovate.

Studies 27, 433–455. This paper investigates and compares the social relations and institutions at the regional level that underpin technologically dynamic, export-oriented production networks in France, Italy and the USA. Localized rules, institutions and practices are key both to their geographical concentration and their technological pertormance. A model of the conventions which co-ordinate economic actors' collective identities and their modes of interaction, or what is called “economic participation”, is built, showing that patterns of geographical concentration and specific forms of innovation are linked to the conventions which define economic identity and participation at the regional level.

But at the same time they are exposed to common problems which demand co-operation for the solution of these problems. This book helps to understand the differences in the way strategists and their followers think, offering practical solutions for those in business to help solve conflict between different groups.

Explains how Japan’s recent recession has caused the cycle to be broken and considers how factors relating to the external and internal environment have influenced the viability of lean production within Japan’s emerging competitive climate. Uses case studies of four manufacturing plants to identify problems, solutions and the need for a new approach to production systems design where costs are more sensitive to changes in demand. Proposes the concept of adaptable production as an approach which can accommodate to greater changes in demand than lean production.

Based on a detailed case study of Nespresso, it seeks to outline how business model innovation can be implemented successfully. Design/methodology/approach Based on a theoretical conceptualization of a business model, the authors conduct an in‐depth case study to draw conclusions for a successful implementation of a business model innovation. Findings A business model innovation comprises five components: an innovative, unique positioning, a consistent product and service logic, an appropriate value creation architecture, an effective sales and marketing logic and a profit formula that works. Success is based upon a unique, innovative and coherent design of the business model's components. Originality/value Based on Nespresso's business model, this paper illustrates what a business model innovation is, what its components are and how they should be designed to create and capture value.

I … Support for this research was provided by a Jean Monnet Fellowship at the European University Institute and by a research grant of the O.E.C.D.'s Office on Local Employment Initiatives. I am most indebted to Paolo Bignardi, who introduced me to the inner workings of the knitwear industry and gave generously of himself during my many visits to his home and firm, and to the Modena National Confederation of Artisans and its staff members, who offered me invaluable assistance. The Modena Camera del Lavoro, the Modena Association of Small Enterprises, the Modena Industrial Association, and Professors Sebastiano Brusco and Tiziano Bursi of the University of Modena also provided crucial help. In addition, I would like to thank Charles Perrow, who first encouraged me to study putting-out, and Marshall Meyer and three anonymous reviewers for their editorial and substantive comments. Drawing on data from the contemporary Italian knitwear industry, this paper examines putting-out, the domestic system of production, and criticisms of it in traditional theories of economic development as inherently backward and organizationally inefficient compared with large-scale production. I describe the historical putting-out system and its context and distinguish it from modern putting-out by contrasting the features of each. The paper shows that a modernized form of putting-out, composed of interlinked microfirms, is compatible with high living standards and organizational efficiency. The success of the system rests on technological and marketing factors, the presence of cohesive family units, cooperative relationships between business and community actors, and an institutional environment supportive of small, family-run firms.'

Yet, our continuing inability to answer questions such as 'when and why is the local important in production and innovation processes?' indicates that our understanding of the firm and the forces that shape its managers' choices remains weak. Such a theory ought to be able to answer fundamental questions like: why do firms in particular places adopt particular production and innovation practices, and not others? What forces determine what a firm 'knows' and when it is able to act upon this knowledge? How easy is it to transfer this knowledge between places? This book presents a new conception of industrial practice and firm behaviour. It explains how the cultures that shape the practices of firms and the trajectories of regional and national economies are actually produced. The analysis shows how the internal and inter-firm organization of production, use of technologies, and the industrial knowledge underpinning these practices are strongly influenced by their social and institutional context. Routine forms of behaviour are not simply inherited from past practice. Instead, they are shaped and constrained - though not wholly determined - by a set of institutions that govern how work is organized, workers are deployed, and technology is implemented. Because of the slowly evolving nature of these institutions, distinctive national 'models' are not converging around a single global norm.

A new phase which can be defined of 'wild globalization', characterized by an exasperated and boundless search for profit, to satisfy the objectives of a global finance that since the 1980s have imposed on multinationals increasing tasks of business results (Profit or Perish). In the last ten years, China, India, Vietnam and many other countries have embarked on a rapid path of globalization. Global development is increasingly alive, and in exemplifying the continuous development of global opening, we can observe how the Catholic Church, in the last ten years with Pope Bergoglio, has also changed the logic of the basic organization, assuming a global vision. In 2025, the 135 eligible Cardinal electors of the new Pope represent 71 countries on all six inhabited continents.

The validation of design choices increasingly relies on such tools, which, thanks to their ability to create interactions between subjects and space, are becoming integral to decision-making processes in design. However, in a context dominated by hyper-realistic simulation and perspective as the prevailing visual paradigm, axonometry still stands out as a relevant geometric model. By prioritising abstraction and interpretation, it becomes a bridge between thought and representation. In other words, its ability to translate abstract concepts into coherent, analysable, and measurable configurations makes this method a form of thought that transcends a merely illustrative role. It enables the tackling of spatial complexity and contributes to the development of both design and cognitive processes. This essay explores the value of axonometry as a tool for analysing, modelling, and communicating forms, demonstrating how it represents a method that, by privileging the homogeneous space of geometric operations over the psycho-physiological space, allows for the representation and interpretation of reality – even if only in a design phase – as a projection of thought.

However, these outlets face challenges due to financial constraints, technological limitations, and human capital shortages. This study analyses the strategies and practices adopted by local radio stations operating in such contexts, with particular attention to the role of media innovation in enhancing sustainability and competitiveness. Methodologically, the research employs a mixed-methods design combining quantitative data from a structured survey and qualitative insights from document analysis. The empirical work covers radio stations from Portugal, Republic of North Macedonia, Slovakia, and Croatia. The survey focused on organisational structure, financial models, digital engagement, and professional development needs, while the document analysis explored contextual and regulatory challenges. The results indicate that local radio stations in low-density areas are confronted with ubiquitous financial constraints, restricted technology incorporation, and insufficient professional training. Despite these challenges, innovative responses are emerging. These include community-based funding models, inter-organisational collaboration, and the adoption of digital platforms for content distribution. The findings also reveal gaps in digital literacy among staff, underlining the necessity of targeted training initiatives. The discussion underscores the transformative potential of digital innovation in addressing structural limitations and enhancing audience involvement. Collaborative networks are identified as key to overcoming isolation and fostering the sharing of expertise and resources. In conclusion, while community media in low-density territories face systemic constraints, strategic innovation can significantly enhance their sustainability and relevance. The study recommends increasing financial support mechanisms, fostering digital literacy, strengthening collaborative practices, and investing in technology-driven solutions. These strategies are essential to ensuring that local radio stations continue to serve their communities in low-density territories amidst the evolving digital landscape.

This SME is in Ngandong village, Gantiwarno subdistrict, Klaten, chaired by Ms. Wijayanti. This group has several priority problems that must be resolved, including: fabric motif designs that are still monotonous and less attractive, bookkeeping that does not exist or financial records are still very simple, and marketing that is still traditional, namely only by word of mouth. The solution then provided by the community service to overcome this problem was to provide batik design training on shibori which is known as Shibotik, simple accounting bookkeeping training for SMEs either manually or simply computerized, as well as internet website development and training for marketing. The method approach applied is participatory training and supervision, partners will always be involved in every activity process. The output that has been achieved in this service is batik motifs applied to shibori, a simple accounting system for SMEs, and an internet website for marketing. With this training, partners are expected to have good skills and abilities in financial management, production and marketing.

The skillful design combines traditional alpine materials with innovative solutions, reflecting the autarkic policies of the Fascist era. Albricci and Zanuso’s proposal, selected for its clear spatial organisation and thoughtful response to the mountain context, included a hundred guest beds, a dining area, and recreational spaces designed to optimise natural light and comfort for climbers. Rediscovered in the Historical Archives of the Politecnico di Milano through the research of Federico Bucci (1959-2023), the project exemplifies the integration of functional requirements and modernist principles, lauded at the time by Giuseppe Pagano (1896-1945) in “Casabella”. Although never built, the design remains a significant example of high-altitude architecture and the intersections between politics, culture, and design in 1930s Italy. The original drawings are now on display at the Made in Polimi exhibition, celebrating the legacy of architectural education and experimentation at the Politecnico di Milano.

In his work, and especially in his series of novels featuring the protagonist Inspector Montalbano, gastronomy takes on a multi-level significance: it functions not only as an everyday practice but also as a tool for narrative connection with local identity, historical memory and social structures in Sicily. Through the detailed descriptions of food and customs, the multicultural influences (Greek, Arab, Norman, etc.) that have shaped Sicilian cuisine are highlighted. At the same time, the study links the literary representation of gastronomy with contemporary practices of cultural management and sustainable tourism, proposing the Sicilian case as a model for enhancing cultural identity and local development through gastronomic tourism.

This concept is explored through the analysis of historic settlements in the Western Italian Alps, where common patterns are observed between rooms, buildings, and entire settlements. The continuity between open and enclosed spaces, between the public and private dimensions, results in a series of intermediary spaces that reflect an integrated view of social and cultural life, as highlighted by Bernardo Secchi and Giancarlo De Carlo. These spaces, defined as ‘interior-exteriors’, are expressions of a dynamic interaction between the environment and construction, where mediation is not represented by porticos or loggias, but by more complex structures such as ‘village houses’. Contemporary designs by architects like Valerio Olgiati and Peter Zumthor revisit and develop these ideas, proposing configurations that intertwine public and private spaces in a play of transitions, thresholds, and visual connections. This approach to mountain architecture not only reinterprets tradition but also explores the possibilities of meaning in environments that continuously blur the boundaries between interior and exterior, as evidenced by recent projects of revitalisation and regeneration in Alpine and mountain contexts.

Starting in childhood, we play with words and things that can become ‘something else’. I am interested in Words that turn into Images and can be Inhabited. I have always tried to describe architecture in words because, as E. Sottsass Jr. says: “The vocabulary fills up with words, the syntax fills up with sentences, metaphors multiply (they Amplify and expand in breadth and depth), and shadow and light become figurative matter, or rather, an open figurative system, meaning they become an everyday language, a spoken language, invented and reinvented. And we can enter it. Thoughts become things, and things, in a circular way, lead us back to thoughts.” In this project, I am interested in searching for ecosystemic Words that bring Text into Context, where thoughts (to Think) become trails (to Tread) to cross and follow, seeking something Wild, raw, evolving, and expressive of something political (of the polis) – evoking a Material Cosmos, because it leads to the Mother, the Origin, and a Symbolic dimension that takes root in a Primary system, bringing gestures and relationships into a Broad and Deep ecosystem.

This text proposes a reflection on the importance of building memory as a reading tool and guide for contemporary design. Mountain landscapes tell of a building culture attentive to the natural context, where the choice of materials, the orientation of buildings, the relationship with the soil, and climatic conditions were fundamental elements. Traditional architecture was not only functional, but an expression of a profound balance with the environment, the result of a collective intelligence handed down across generations. Today, many of these buildings are in danger of abandonment or are being replaced by constructions that ignore the context, generating discontinuity and loss of identity. In response to this trend, designing requires accepting cultural, environmental, and social responsibility. It is necessary to recover a conscious approach, capable of reinterpreting the knowledge of the past through a contemporary lens, enhancing the relationship between architecture and place. Building is not just a physical act, but a gesture that affects time, which must generate meaning, dialogue, and continuity. This is the only way to restore dignity to the built landscape, making architecture an integral part of the history and future of territories.

One of the potentials of SCG is its use as a scented candle. This is due to low moisture and ash content, and high oil fraction of SCG. This research aimed to investigate the physicochemical properties of different types of SCG and the suitability of the SCG to be used in scented candle making. SCG from different brewing methods such as moka pot and espresso were used in this study. The physicochemical properties of these SCGs were analysed. In candle making, different concentrations of SCG were applied, ranging from 20 to 50%. From the results, it could be seen that the physicochemical properties of the moka pot and espresso-brewed SCG were different, which could affect the performance of the scented candle produced using the SCG. The burning performance such as wax consumption rate, pool size, and flame height, were measured. In conclusion, the suitable concentration of SCG in scented candle making was found to be 30% and 40% for the Moka pot with the addition of soy wax, 20% for espresso concentration, and 30% for the Moka pot with the addition of paraffin wax
