However, until now, there was no readily available source in English providing answers to these questions or giving an overview of past and current research in this area. This book is intended to partly fill this void.<br />The book contains both state-of-the-art papers which summarize our knowledge about particular areas of Basque historical linguistics, and articles presenting new hypotheses and points of view based on hard evidence and careful analysis.<br />All contributors to this volume have demonstrated expertise in the topic within Basque historical linguistics that their chapter addresses. Two classical articles by the late Luis Michelena are included in English translation. In addition, the book includes studies on diachronic phonology, morphology and syntax. The relation of Basque to other languages is also investigated in a couple of chapters.

However, perhaps because of the incomplete sources, the facts are often misrepresented. Thus Kenstowicz & Kisseberth (1979) mix facts from different dialects and Trask’s (1996) 'conservative Bizkaian', which he uses to illustrate rule reordering, is purely fictional. In addition, the incompleteness of the data that are presented can be misleading. The reader may conclude that no other possibilities are found (or could be found). This is enough reason to justify the compilation of facts that we undertake in this paper. Another important reason, of course, is that as a consequence of the difusion of standard Basque much of the existing diversity in the treatment of vowel sequences in Basque can be expected to disappear in the near future. It is thus important to document these facts in an easily available source.

Reclaiming Basque examines the ideology, methods, and discourse of the Basque-language revitalization movement over the course of the past century and the way this effort has unfolded alongside the simultaneous Basque nationalist struggle for autonomy. Jacqueline Urla employs extensive long-term fieldwork and close examination of a vast range of documents to uncover the strategies that have been used to preserve and revive Basque and the various controversies that have arisen among language advocates. Reclaiming Basque offers a new perspective on language activism as a dynamic and evolving social movement. It addresses the complex issue of what it means to speak Basque in the contemporary Basque Country, as well as the roles of minority languages, language policies, and cultural identity in a globalized world.

He offers a contextualized account of the endemic conflict engaging Basque villagers both as protagonists and as spectators.

It demonstrates that, despite their identical dative morphology, DOM objects display a different syntax to goal indirect objects. Based on the licensing of depictive secondary predication and on the absolutive marking of non-human and indefinite objects, it argues that DOM objects are generated in a direct rather than indirect object configuration. Moreover, given the tight relation between case and agreement in ditransitive constructions and the possibility to check Case in Exceptional Case Marking (ECM) contexts, it proposes that dative Case in DOM is structurally checked in an Agree relation against a functional head of the verbal agreement complex. The article thus identifies a different dative argument which has not been previously characterized in this manner: one that does not originate within an applicative or postpositional phrase and checks Case structurally.

The combination of territorial claims and armed struggle gives rise to a very definite strategy, violence intended to coerce the State. Nationalist terrorist organizations kill repeatedly with the aim of breaking the will of the State. They engage in a peculiar sort of war of attrition with the State. This paper analyzes comparatively the war of attrition strategy in two organizations, ETA and the IRA. The focus of the paper is on strategy: it examines how ETA and the IRA understood their activity in terms of war of attrition and how they developed their strategy subject to some constraints, such as the moderate preferences of their supporters. I show that popularity constraints account for the high degree of selectivity in their killings. The analysis is based on a combination of historical information, internal documents, and a large data set I have constructed of the killings of these two organizations.

Although some of the first authors to publish in Basque in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries explicitly remarked on the difficulties brought about by dialectal diversity, very little progress in the standardization of the language was made until the second half of the twentieth century. Even the impact of the rise of Basque nationalism at the end of the nineteenth century was not entirely positive, since the founder of the Basque Nationalist Party favored the development of a different written variety for each of the Basque provinces. The extreme puristic and neologizing tendency of some writers at the time was also a source of obstacles on the path towards standardization. A Basque language academy was founded in 1918 with the unification of the written language as one of its main goals, but it made essentially no progress until the linguist Luis Michelena (Mitxelena) presented a report to the Basque Academy in 1968 on the bases for a written standard language. From then on, other stages in the standardization process have taken place very rapidly. This new standard has enjoyed enormous success and in a few decades has become firmly established in Basque society.

This chapter investigates the Aktionsart principles that govern (1) a verb's placement in one of the classes; and (2) the choice between the two paradigms for A&B-verbs.

Paying particular attention to the effects of tourism on the local people, the article details the process by which tourism first benefited them, only later to come to be controlled by outside developers who have captured most of the major economic rewards. It also discusses changes in local social stratification and political structure wrought by tourism development. The need for a systematic, broadly conceived appraisal of the costs and benefits of tourism as an agent of economic development is stressed.

Only in the Basque provinces (Euskadi) is there any significant challenge to the legitimacy of the regime. In that region, about one quarter of the population still regard the Spanish state as an illegitimate imposition on the Basque nation. Some Basque parties have maintained (at least until very recently) a semiloyal stance vis-à-vis the regime, and one has functioned unequivocally as an antisystem party. That party, Herri Batasuna, has consistently received about one sixth of the vote in regional and national elections over the past decade and a half. It has also supported an organization, Euskadi ta Askatasuna (ETA), that has used terrorist violence in its campaign for Basque independence – a clear violation of the democratic rules of the game.

These influences on the lexicon, grammar, and toponymy of the West Indo-European languages (with special focus on Germanic) are demonstrated in German and English research papers, provided here with summaries, commentaries, and a new introduction in English, and with general and etymological indexes.

His discussion employs one of the most debated approaches in the social sciences - historical institutionalism - and it includes an up-to-date examination of the circumstances for, and consequences of, recent events such as ETA's announcement in 2006 of a permanent cease-fire.Lecours also analyzes other aspects of Basque nationalism, including the international relations of the Basque Autonomous Government, as well as the responses of the contemporary Spanish state and how it deploys its own brand of nationalism. Finally, the book offers a comparative discussion of Basque, Catalan, Scottish, Flemish, and Quebecois nationalist movements, suggesting that nationalism in the Basque Country, despite the historical presence of violence, is in many ways similar to nationalism in other industrialized democracies. Basque Nationalism and the Spanish State is an original and provocative discussion that is essential reading for anyone interested in the Basques or in the development of modern nationalist movements.

Whereas, traditionally, descriptive work on Basque has primarily focused on morphological features, including its complex system of verb-argument agreement and its strict ergative pattern of inflection, during the last two decades a new generation of Basque linguists has produced very sophisticated, theoretically-informed work on many aspects of the syntax, morphology and phonology of the language, revealing, for instance, a process of focalization with many interesting properties and the existence in some dialects of an accentual system strikingly similar to that of standard Japanese. The book, bringing together this accumulated knowledge on the structure of Basque, is considerably more complete than any other existing grammar of the language. Another interesting feature of this grammar is that the description is illustrated with fully-glossed examples extracted from a great number of written sources. Although the focus is the modern standard language, dialectal features are considered in detail and examples are taken from all dialects and periods.

Plaka bidezko trenbidea eraikitzeko beharrezko denbora eta hasierako kostuaren gehikuntza, epe luzera konpentsatzen da, balasto bidezko trenbideetan ez bezala, ia mantentze beharrik ez baitu. Azken hauetan bateatze, egonkortze, profilatze, balasto-arazte eta abarreko lanak egitea ezinbestekoa da zirkulazioaren kalitate egokia mantentzeko. Plaka bidezko trenbideak, aldiz, desabantaila garrantzitsu bat du. Ez da egokia errailetik irtetea, uholdeak, ezpondak erortzea edo osagaien balio-bizitza amaitzea bezalako arrazoiak direla eta, ordeztu edo konpontzea ezinbestekoa den egoeretarako. Gaur egun, kaltetutako edo balio-bizitza agortu duten plakak konpontzeko/ordezteko prozesua, funtsean, ordeztu beharreko plaka mailu pneumatikoz guztiz eraitsi arte txikitzean datza, horrek kutsadura (akustikoa, hautsa, etab.) eta langileen arazo ergonomikoak dakartzalarik. Hori dela eta, oso lagungarria litzateke kaltetutako plakak azkar konpontzeko sistema berritzaile eta efizientea garatzea, zirkulazio-etenak minimizatuko liratekeelarik eta, ondorioz, azpiegitura-administratzaileen gastua eta bidaiarientzako afekzioak mugatu. Lan honetan, mikrouhin bitartez plaka bidezko trenbideak eraginkortasunez eraisteko metodo bat aurkezten da. Lanak prozesuaren zenbakizko simulazioak, probeta eskalako saiakuntzak eta, lan honen egileek eraikitako trenbide-plaka prototipoan, mikrouhinak aplikatzeko prototipoarekin lortutako emaitza esperimentalak biltzen ditu. Plaka-trenbidea eraikitzeko ohiko materialen azterketa burutu da eta, trenbide-araudiarekin bat, portaera mekaniko egokiaz haien osotasuna bermatu eta, gaur egun erabiltzen diren metodoak baino modu eraginkorragoan eta jasangarriagoan, haien eraistea eta ordezkatzea erraztuko duen materiala bilatu da.

Haien fabrikazioan hainbat operazio daude, baina azkenekoa da kritikoena. Azken operazio hau fresaketa mekanikoa izaten da, eta erronka garrantzitsuak ditu oraindik ere, batez ere hondar-tentsioek sortzen duten deformazioa murriztea eta ebaketa-indarrek eragiten dituzten bibrazioak ―chatterra, batez ere― saihestea, zeinak oso kaltegarriak baitira bai fresagailuarentzat, bai zoru mehearen gainazal-akaberarentzat. Hainbat teknika daude erronka hauei aurre egiteko, batik bat ebaketa-baldintza aproposen aukeraketa, egonkortasun-lobuluen kalkuluaren bidez; eta tresneria eta lokailuen erabilera, zoru meheak zurruntzeko. Dena den, posible da teknika hauek ezin izatea guztiz ekidin bibrazioak, zoruen zurruntasun izugarriki txikia eta aldakorragatik fresaketan zehar. Honengatik, prozedura bat mahaigaineratzen da zoru meheen geometria anitzetara moldatzen den tresneriaren erabilera bultzatzeko. Ondorioz, ahalko dira zoruan baldintza egokiekin fresatuz gero bibraziorik eta akatsik gabeko eremuak zedarritu.
