In recent years, at the National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ), an ultrasonic power primary standard of from 1 mW to 15 W has been established by the radiation force balance (RFB) method. Conventionally, the RFB method is widely used for ultrasonic power measurement, but this method is not suitable for very high power measurement due to thermal damages to the absorbing targets. High power ultrasonic standards, however, are being required by medical HITU measurements and in the sonochemistry industry. In order to meet these requirements, we have started to develop an ultrasonic power standard between 15 W and 200 W. Our final goal is an ultrasonic power standard of up to 500 W. The calorimetric method is an alternative ultrasonic power measurement method to the RFB method. We have adopted this method and use water as the heating material. Water has excellent features as a standard material, because the physical properties of water are well known. In the present study, we present an experimental system and the results for an ultrasonic power standard of up to 100 W. The measured ultrasonic power agreed well with the NMIJ primary standard up to 25 W.

For 41 elderly hospitalized patients common salt from the hospital kitchen was replaced by Na+-K+-Mg2+ salt for 3–5 weeks; for in 85 drug-treated outpatients home use of NaCl was replaced by the use of Na+-K+-Mg2+ salt for 6 months. The patients' acceptance of the Na+-K+-Mg2+ salt was good. No metabolic or other side effects could be detected while the salt was being used. Na+-K+-Mg2+ salt was associated with a fall in blood pressure in drug-treated hypertensive patients, a rise in serum magnesium and in previously low serum potassium concentrations, a fall in raised fasting blood glucose levels, and an improvement in oral glucose tolerance. The results demonstrate that a considerable part of the NaCl in common table salt could be replaced by potassium and magnesium salts without causing potassium or magnesium toxicity. The results also lend support to the concept that an increase in potassium and magnesium intake and a decrease in sodium intake may have beneficial effects in a substantial number of people.

An attempt has been made to apply an existing peer assessment approach from Goldfinch to engineering student group projects. The results confirm the validity of the approach. However, the existing approach has a number of problems owing to the inevitable bias introduced by individual students during the peer assessment process. A new normalisation process is introduced to iron out the inherent shortcomings of the existing peer assessment method. The experience gained so far has led us to believe that this peer assessment method with normalisation can be used as a tool to assess individual marks of a group project.

Methods —Booster seat practices were assessed at 76 child safety seat clinics held between April 1997 and January 1999 in Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. At each assessment, a child passenger safety team evaluated the booster seat and identified modes of misuse. Results —Altogether 227 booster seats were observed. Sixty eight per cent (68%) of shield boosters and 20% of belt positioning boosters were misused. Thirty two per cent of the children using a shield booster weighed more than 40 lb (18.1 kg); 68% of children in shield boosters and 63% in belt positioning boosters weighed less than 40 lb. Conclusions —This study identified a relatively high rate of booster seat misuse. Shield boosters were more likely to be misused than belt positioning booster seats. Significant numbers of children weighing more than 40 lb were using possibly dangerous shield boosters. The majority of children in this study were less than 40 lb. In this weight range, a convertible child restraint system provides better protection than a booster seat. Booster seat use should only be initiated once the child has completely outgrown their convertible child restraint system.

In the present study, we investigated the effect of forest bathing trip on human NK activity in female subjects. Thirteen healthy nurses, age 25-43 years, professional career 4-18 years, were selected with informed consent. The subjects experienced a three-day/two-night trip to forest fields. On day 1, the subjects walked for two hours in the afternoon in a forest field; on day 2, they walked for two hours each in the morning and afternoon in two different forest fields; and on day 3, the subjects finished the trip and returned to Tokyo after drawing blood and completing a questionnaire. Blood and urine were sampled on the second and third days during the trip, and on days 7 and 30 after the trip. NK activity, numbers of NK and T cells, and granulysin, perforin, and granzymes A/B-expressing lymphocytes in the blood samples, the concentrations of estradiol and progesterone in serum, and the concentrations of adrenaline and noradrenaline in urine were measured. Similar control measurements were made before the trip on a normal working day. The concentrations of phytoncides in the forests were measured. The forest bathing trip significantly increased NK activity and the numbers of NK, perforin, granulysin, and granzymes A/B-expressing cells and significantly decreased the percentage of T cells, and the concentrations of adrenaline and noradrenaline in urine. The increased NK activity lasted for more than 7 days after the trip. Phytoncides, such as alpha-pinene and beta-pinene were detected in forest air. These findings indicate that a forest bathing trip also increased NK activity, number of NK cells, and levels of intracellular anti-cancer proteins in female subjects, and that this effect lasted at least 7 days after the trip. Phytoncides released from trees and decreased stress hormone levels may partially contribute to the increased NK activity.

This development … The development of a humanoid robot platform within the scope of the collaborative research centre 588 has the objective of creating a machine that closely cooperates with humans. This development area presents a new challenge to designers. In contrast to industrial robots - for which mechanical rigidity, precision and high velocities are primary requirements - the key aspects here are prevention of hazards to users, a motion space that corresponds to that of human beings and a lightweight design. In order to meet these requirements, the robot must have humanlike appearance, motion space and dexterity. Additionally, its kinematics should be familiar to the user, its motions predictable, so as to encourage inexperienced persons to interact with the machine. This article gives insight into the design of the mechatronic components of the upper body of the humanoid robot ARMAR III. Due to the special boundary conditions for the design of such a humanoid robot and complex interaction between system elements, the design process is very challenging. The robot has a modular structure. The modules for neck, torso and arms were designed and built at the Institute of Product Development (IPEK) at the University of Karlsruhe (TH). The design of these modules of the upper body and the problems solved by these designs are presented in this article

However, practice and research are being conducted without clear definitions and methods for STEM education. Moreover, the positioning and characteristics of the technology included in each STEM field are unclear. Therefore, it is necessary to propose an appropriate framework for practice of STEM from the viewpoint of technology education. In response to this need, this commentary proposes a conceptual framework for the appropriate practice of STEM education. Results First, we referred to the perspectives and thinking styles of the fields of science, technology, and mathematics in the Japanese curriculum to specify the approach of the education system to each subject included in STEM. Next, to determine the concept of engineering in STEM education, we referred to the definition of engineering presented in Japan, the USA, and the UK. We positioned engineering, which means creating structures, processes, systems, etc., as a practical STEM activity and attempted to relate it to the unique perspectives and thinking styles of mathematics, science, and technology. Conclusion We proposed a conceptual framework for the appropriate practice of STEM education based on the principles of subjects in the Japanese curriculum. The conceptual framework suggests that a means to improve the practice of STEM education is to retain the principles of science, technology, and mathematics in the activity of engineering. It can be inferred that the key point for practicing STEM education is to examine and design the appropriate order and combination of the learning process and activities based on the proposed conceptual framework. Although this framework is theoretical, it can be useful in determining an adequate practice of STEM education and clarifying the relationship between STEM education and technology education.

Primary findings suggest that the mentor scheme significantly enhances collaborative learning by providing a structured environment where students can engage in meaningful interactions with peers and mentors. These interactions are shown to improve abilities of problem solving, critical thinking and communication skills amongst students. Furthermore, the sense of community and support fostered by the mentor scheme contributes to increased motivation and a positive learning experience. The research identifies key factors that influence the success of the collaborative learning process, such as the quality of mentor-mentee relationships, the effectiveness of communication channels, and the availability of resources on the SWAYAM platform. Challenges such as varying levels of mentor engagement and the need for continuous mentor training are also discussed. The research concludes with recommendations for optimizing schemes, including strategies for sustaining mentor training, improving digital tools for collaborations, and integrating feedback mechanisms to continuously refine the mentorship process. The findings underscore the potential of mentorship and collaborative learning frameworks in transforming educational practices and highlight the broader implications for integrating such schemes into digital learning platforms globally.

Therefore, by integrating the published PAEs exposure data between 2010 and 2023, we explored the distribution pattern of PAEs contamination at the national scale, assessed the health risks mediated by multi-mediated PAEs exposure, and quantified the main contributing factors to the health risks of PAEs in China. A total of 3 457 PAEs exposure data points from 32 provinces were collected. The results indicated that dibutyl phthalate (DBP), diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the predominant pollutants in all environmental media. Zhejiang (120 ng·m-3), Heilongjiang (6 800 ng·L-1), and Guangxi (0.298 mg·kg-1) exhibited the highest median concentrations and contents of PAEs in the atmosphere, water bodies, and soil, respectively. The risk assessment results revealed that the non-carcinogenic risks mediated by PAEs were below 1 for all provinces in China; however, children in Heilongjiang, Zhejiang, and Shanxi provinces faced carcinogenic risks due to exposure to PAEs across multiple media. DEHP was identified as the primary pollutant contributing to PAEs-related health risks (contributing approximately 71%-72%), with water bodies and drinking water intake being the most significant exposure media and pathways, contributing approximately 48%-59% and 49%-59% of the total risk, respectively. Based on the established PAEs exposure database, this study reveals the current status of multi-mediated health risks of PAEs in the Chinese population, which can help to develop targeted strategies to reduce the health risks of PAEs exposure in the population.

For example, the tasks in palm oil plantations require precision, efficiency, and adaptability to navigate the complex environment. Robotics solve these challenges by enhancing farming and executing tasks such as cutting fresh fruit bunches that surpass manual labor. By examining the optimal dimensions synthesis for the robotic arm and integrating the Denavit-Hartenberg (DH) parameters for kinematic modeling, this study aims to enhance the degree of freedom, enabling precise and flexible movements, which is crucial for navigating around palm oil trees. This research evaluates two optimization algorithms, artificial bee colony (ABC) and particle swarm optimization (PSO), specifically tailored for robotic arms in the agricultural sector and intended to improve performance. Kinematic modeling simulations are conducted using MATLAB software. This research emphasizes optimization methods to ensure the accurate and efficient execution of tasks. The results indicate that the PSO algorithm outperforms the ABC algorithm in terms of error minimization. Specifically, the mean square error for PSO is 5.0433 x 10-6, compared to 9.3904 x 10-6 for ABC. These results demonstrate that the PSO algorithm provides more accurate and efficient task execution for the robotic arm in agricultural applications. At Japanese universities, traditionally a Final Project combining undergraduate research and a senior capstone programme is completed. Associate Professor Takero Nishino, Department of Business Administration, Kyoto Tachibana University, Japan, conducted a survey to gain insights on Final Projects and found that 95 per cent of departments conduct a Final Project, 83 per cent require all students to complete one and 91 per cent of the Final Project results are submitted in the form of research papers. Nearly half are linked to the educational objectives set out by the department, demonstrating that the Final Project effectively measures the final learning outcomes of an institution’s undergraduate programme, promoting quality assurance in the education provided. He believes that promoting the unification of evaluation standards for the Final Project and sharing the results inside and outside the university would improve the quality of undergraduate education and enhance perception of its worth on a larger scale. Nishinoâ–™s work to improve higher education through Final Project combines a quantitative approach using a questionnaire survey to gather data; a qualitative approach involving analysis of the interviews and the collection documents related to the evaluation criteria; and an experimental approach based on action research in multiple sites.
