Michel … Bloch has attempted to establish what he calls a 'literary anthropology.' The project is important and ambitious. It seems to me that Mr. Bloch has completely achieved this ambition. Michel Foucault Study is a genuinely interdisciplinaryone, bringing together elements of history, ethnology, philology, philosophy, economics and literature, with the undoubted ambition of generating a new synthesis which will enable us to read the Middle Ages in a different light. Stated simply, and in terms which do justice neither to the density nor the subtlety of his argument, Bloch's thesis is this: that medieval society perceived itself in terms of a vertical mode of descent from origins. This model is articulated etymologically in medieval theories of grammar and language, and is consequently reflected in historical and theological writings; it is also latent in the genealogical structure of the aristocratic family as it began to be organized in France in the twelfth century, and is made manifest in such systems of signs as heraldry and the adoption of patronymns. . . . It is an ingenious and compelling synthesis which no medievalist, even on this side of the Atlantic, can afford to ignore. Nicholas Mann, Times Literary Supplement

I am especially concerned with semantically 'canonical' suppletions, where there is no possibility that what is involved is a kind of lexicalization of a morphosyntactic distinction having particularly high 'relevance' to the suppleting lexeme, since there is simply no difference of meaning between the alternants. A survey of such suppletions in the verb across the Romance languages yields two main findings: (i) that the source of the synonymy which diachronically feeds suppletion is either linguistic borrowing, or lexemes which are in a relationship of hyponymy-hyperonymy, where the semantic distinction is inherently tenuous; (ii) that in Romance suppletions have paradigmatic distributions that almost never 'make sense' in terms of being aligned with any kind of morphosyntactic meaning --- and that even when they appear to 'make sense', there are reasons to suspect that this fact is fortuitous. Rather, suppletions show a strong tendency to become aligned with recurrent, but profoundly idiosyncratic, patterns of paradigmatic allomorphy largely resulting, historically, from sound change. I suggest that one of a number of possible reactions to synonymy (something generally disfavoured in the lexicon) is to map semantically vacuous lexical distinctions onto semantically vacuous paradigmatic distinctions. In conclusion, I propose that studies of suppletion in all languages might benefit from asking more often why suppletions have the paradigmatic distributions they have, and being prepared to accept the possibility that an answer may lie in synchronically abstract and highly idiosyncratic aspects of paradigmatic structure.

If one restricts consideration … If G is a topological group then by a G-space we mean a completely regular space X together with a fixed action of G on X. If one restricts consideration to compact Lie groups then a substantial general theory of G-spaces can be developed. However if G is allowed to be anything more general than a compact Lie group, theorems about G-spaces become extremely scarce, and it is clear that if one hopes to recover any sort of theory, some restriction must be made on the way G is allowed to act. A clue as to the sort of restriction that should be made is to be found in one of the most fundamental facts in the theory of G-spaces when G is a compact Lie group; namely the result, proved in special cases by Gleason 12], Koszul [5], Montgomery and Yang [6] and finally, in full generality, by Mostow [8] that there is a through each point of a G-space (see 2.1.1 for definition). In fact it is clear from even a passing acquaintance with the methodology of proof in transformation group theory that if G is a Lie group and X a G-space with compact isotropy groups for which there exists a slice at each point, then many of the statements that apply when G is compact are valid in this case also. In ? 1 of this paper we define a G-space X (G any locally compact group) -to be a Cartan G-space if for each point of X there is a neighborhood U such that the set of g in G for which g U n U is not empty has compact closure. In case G acts freely on X (i.e., the isotropy group at each point is the identity) this turns out to be equivalent to H. Cartan's basic axiom PF for principal bundles in the Seminaire H. Cartan of 1948-49, which explains the choice of name. In ? 2 we show that if G is a Lie group then the Cartan G-spaces are precisely those G-spaces with compact isotropy groups for which there is a slice through every point. As remarked above this allows one to extend a substantial portion of the theory of G-space that holds when G is a compact Lie group to Cartan G-spaces (or the slightly more restrictive class of proper G-spaces, also introduced in ? 1) when G is an arbitrary Lie group. Part of this extension is carried out in ? 4, more or less by way of showing what can be done. In particular we prove a generalization of Mostow's equivariant embed-

She argues that the vernacular prose histories that have until now been regarded as royalist were actually products of the aristocracy, reflecting its anxiety as it faced social and economic change and political threats from the monarchy. Spiegel suggests that this turn to prose - the language of truth - is tied to the desire of a threatened elite to authenticate its claim to historical legitimacy. Additionally, it worked to distinguish the vernacular chronicle from earlier Old French literary forms such as epic and romance, against which the vernacular prose historiography created its generic identity.

The documents in question throw much light both on the purposes for which French was used in this country in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and on the classes who employed it, and show that its use was more widespread and that it persisted longer than is generally supposed.

It offers a detailed structural treatment of all the individual Romance varieties and Romance-speaking areas (including standard, non-standard, dialectal, and regional varieties of the Romània continua and the Romània nova), as well as a comparative treatment of major topics, issues, and case studies across different areas of the grammar of the Romance languages. Organized along thematic lines into 10 ‘Parts’, the Guide brings together a rich variety of comparative in-depth studies in Romance linguistics organized according to different grammatical phenomena, different approaches, and different language groupings, specifically dealing with 1: The making of the Romance languages; 2: Typology and classification; 3: Individual structural overviews (of Romance languages, dialects, and linguistic areas); 4: Comparative overviews (in turn divided into: Phonology; Morphology; Syntax; Semantics and pragmatics; Sociolinguistics); 5: Issues in Romance phonology; 6: Issues in Romance morphology; 7: Issues in Romance syntax; 8: Issues in Romance syntax and semantics; 9: Issues in Romance pragmatics and discourse; and 10: Case studies (in turn divided into the following subsections: The nominal group; The verbal group; The clause).

Apart from the refined love songs for which the troubadours are renowned, the tradition includes political and satirical poetry, devotional lyrics and bawdy or zany poems. It is also in the troubadour song-books that the only substantial collection of medieval lyrics by women is preserved. This book offers a general introduction to the troubadours. Its sixteen newly-commissioned essays, written by leading scholars from Britain, the US, France, Italy and Spain, trace the historical development and setting of troubadour song, engage with the main trends in troubadour criticism, and examine the reception of troubadour poetry. Appendices offer an invaluable guide to the troubadours, to technical vocabulary, to research tools and to surviving manuscripts.

Drawing on a wide range of philosophical, literary-critical, and sociological works produced within the French nouvelle critique of the 1960s, Holsinger argues for reconceiving these discourses, in part, as a brilliant amalgamation of medievalisms. Holsinger shows that the preoccupation with medieval cultures and practices among Bataille, Derrida, Lacan, Barthes, Bourdieu, and their cohorts was so wide ranging that it merits recognition as one of the most significant epiphenomena of postwar French thought. Not simply an object of nostalgic longing or an occasional source of literary exempla, the medieval epoch was continually mined by these thinkers for specific philosophical vocabularies, social formations, and systems of thought. To supplement its master thesis, The Premodern Condition also contains original essays by Bataille and Bourdieu - translated here for the first time into English - that testify in various ways to the strange persistence of medievalisms in French postwar avant-garde writings. What results is an important and original work that will be a touchstone for specialists in medieval studies and critical theory alike.

After outlining Romantic scholarly, critical, and creative investments in Old Occitan literature, it considers Scott's views of 1820s Europe and how his troubadour interests relate to his concerns with the continent's political situation. It subsequently analyzes the troubadour theme in The Talisman and Anne of Geierstein in light of Scott's reflections on past and present-day Europe as an unstable geo-political and literary-cultural nexus informed by contending national and transnational tendencies. As this essay demonstrates, more than mere objects of erudition or features of historical color, Scott's troubadours play a significant role in the darkening vision of post-Napoleonic Europe he developed in his later years.

It turns out that, for this corner of the upper Garonne basin, previous works have identified several names which seem to be inaccurate. In fact, there are only four Aranese nouns for the sink, two of which ( poladèr and puladèr ) represent the same lexical type and are not used – apparently – anywhere else. According to Joan Coromines, the first component of poladèr and puladèr would be podiu . If puladèr can be explained by poi , a normal form in Aranese, our hypothesis is that poladèr contains pog , with an affricate consonant that we find in Haute-Garonne and particularly in Ariège, and which is attested in toponymy.

However, modern and contemporary critics have often judged them negatively, for example as extravagant or poorly crafted – if they have not ignored them altogether. Taking as an example Finnboga saga ramma (Saga of Finnbogi the Strong), this contribution aims to redress such views and demonstrate how these texts are, instead, the fruit of careful and innovative work by their authors, which deserves to be appreciated and, primarily, to be truly considered by scholars.

Drawing on ethnographic data collected in studios, as well as interviews with musicians and cultural actors in Senegal, the objective of this study is to demonstrate that these libraries are not merely the sum of the samples they contain. Their organization reflects classification strategies and criteria (by theme, type, date, or origin). Moreover, the computer desktop, where these sound banks are stored, constitutes a site of knowledge that is also inherently connected, embedded within multiple scales, from the local to the global. The sound banks of beatmakers thus offer insight into how they navigate these dynamics, shedding light on the relationships between samples in terms of their origin and use.

Abstract: This research aims to reflect on the canticle Magnificat through a feminine, liberating perspective with the goal of unearthing its contribution to pastoral praxis in the synodal Church. Mary of Nazareth’s Canticle is a selfmariology and first result of her meditation on events that she was historically and intimately part of. The maiden from Nazareth knows that in her womb was formed the principle of sanctity and liberation, is filled with female courage, and sings the prophetic New Testament canticle of personal, social, moral, religious, economic, and ecologic liberation. With that, she becomes a backing for catholic women who fight against a sexist and clericalist structure inside the Church’s hierarchy, which places them in a position of subordination and deprives them full participation in the Church’s government and ministry. Her joy is not empty and expresses itself today in the synodality proposed by Francis. It has motives of messianic-feminist and revolutionary exaltation, as, in patriarchal and androcentric society and Church, God makes a woman a cooperator of salvation. Mary can help reflect on the indispensable role of women in a less hierarchical, synodal ecclesiology. Keywords: Magnificat; Mary; Woman; Synodality; Liberation.

Nevertheless, there has been no systematic research so far on how Eminescu integrated with Junimea from a sociological perspective or on the contexts in which his social and/or literary performance reflected his belonging to the cenacle. In light of these observations, this paper aims to explore Mihai Eminescu’s personality as a member of Junimea, starting from the sociability patterns illustrated by the poet within the cenacle and using the recent studies on literary forms of sociability as a theoretical framework. I am interested in the postures that Eminescu embodied within his relations with Junimea, in the gestures and practices that he took up as a result of being part of this social environment, as well as in the influence of the poet’s both presence and absence on the dynamic of the cenacle. I will propose two directions of analysis – Eminescu as an in praesentia and as an in absentia member of Junimea – and I will outline the postures embodied by the poet in each case. My main objective is to circumscribe the two-edged sociological influence, of Junimea on Eminescu and of Eminescu on Junimea and, this way, to emphasize the human, sociable side of the poet’s personality, who followed a typical path for a 19th-century Romanian writer and embraced the ethos of a literary group.

Topintzi and Zimmermann 2023 offers an account within moraic theory and asserts that length-based, nonmoraic analyses are at a loss when facing this problem. We use this debate as a starting point to a discussion of weight hierarchies in the languages of the world. We propose an analysis in Strict CV Metrics (Faust and Ulfsbjorninn 2018), a nonmoraic theory which does not conflate syllable structure and metrics. Instead, the latter is built on the former. The typology of weight takes the shape of a restrictive, nonrerankable parameter hierarchy, which indicates what aspects of universal syllabification contribute weight in a given language. The parameter hierarchy correctly predicts all the attested weight scales in natural language and correctly excludes many unattested systems. We compare our approach to the moraic one and find it preferable on several fronts. Unlike its competitor, it does not require arbitrary phonetic translations; it is easily extendable to long vowels; and it makes clear, correct and falsifiable predictions.
