Focusing on Europe in the first half of the century and the United States in the latter, Khan adopts an interdisciplinary approach in his establishment of the study of “phonography.” Index, 10 p. Sonic weapons of this sort include the psychoacoustic correction aimed at Panama strongman Manuel Noriega by the U.S. Army and at the Branch Davidians in Waco by the FBI, sonic booms (or bombs) over the Gaza Strip, and high-frequency rat repellents used against teenagers in malls. At the same time, artists and musicians generate intense frequencies in the search for new aesthetic experiences and new ways of mobilizing bodies in rhythm. In Sonic Warfare, Steve Goodman explores these uses of acoustic force and how they affect populations. Most theoretical discussions of sound and music cultures in relationship to power, Goodman argues, have a missing dimension: the politics of frequency. Goodman supplies this by drawing a speculative diagram of sonic forces, investigating the deployment of sound systems in the modulation of affect. Traversing philosophy, science, fiction, aesthetics, and popular culture, he maps a (dis)continuum of vibrational force, encompassing police and military research into acoustic means of crowd control, the corporate deployment of sonic branding, and the intense sonic encounters of sound art and music culture. Goodman concludes with speculations on the not yet heardthe concept of unsound, which relates to both the peripheries of auditory perception and the unactualized nexus of rhythms and frequencies within audible bandwidths. It draws on a wealth of accessible examples, ranging from Beethoven to Chinese zither music. This VSI also discusses the nature of music as a real-time performance practice; the role of music in social and political action; and the nature of musical thinking, including the roles played in it by instruments, notations, and creative imagination. Digital technology has had a massive impact on the production and consumption of music, including transforming participatory music-making and the music business. This in turn has affected music’s position in a globalized world. In many ways music has changed out of all recognition over the last twenty years.

The very way we relate to, and think about, … Sight and sound are equally crucial to our understanding of the world, yet the visual has dominated discussions of cultural experience. The very way we relate to, and think about, our everyday world has been influenced by this emphasis on sight over sound. Providing a definitive overview of an emerging field, this pioneering reader is the first to redress a glaring imbalance by investigating how auditory culture subtly and profoundly impacts on our everyday lives. From the evocative tolling of village bells to the grating rattle of exhaust pipes, what we hear influences how we feel and what we do. As technology advances, the world has become an increasingly noisy, confusing and disturbing place. The recent addition of mobile phones alone has irrevocably changed our auditory experiences. In order to retreat from jarring sounds, we seek new sounds sounds that calm, block, soothe. Beginning with the role of sound in historical and social thought, The Auditory Culture Reader moves on to consider city noise, music, voices, and new technologies and medias of sound. It explores, for example, the sectarian sounds of North Belfast, sounds of the powwow amongst Native Americans, football chants, recorded sermons, and the power and influence of the DJs voice. Filling a significant gap, this groundbreaking and multidisciplinary reader combines classic texts, interviews and original contributions by leading social and cultural theorists. It represents a landmark statement on a surprisingly overlooked aspect of our everyday experience.

In these lectures, scores, and writings, Cage tries, as he says, to find a way of writing that comes from ideas, is not about them, but that produces them. Often these writings include mesostics and essays created by subjecting the work of other writers to chance procedures using the I Ching. Fifty years later comes a beautiful new edition with a foreword by eminent music critic Kyle Gann. A landmark book in American arts and culture, Silence has been translated into more than forty languages and has sold over half a million copies worldwide. Wesleyan University Press is proud to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the book's publication with this special hardcover edition.

With … The Audible Past explores the cultural origins of reproduction. It describes a distinctive culture that gave birth to the recording and the transmission devices so ubiquitous in modern life. With an ear for the unexpected, scholar and musician Jonathan Sterne uses the technological and cultural precursors of telephony, phonography, and radio as an entry point into a history of in its own right. Sterne studies the constantly shifting boundary between phenomena organized as sound and not sound. In The Audible Past, this history crisscrosses the liminal regions between bodies and machines, originals and copies, nature and culture, and life and death. Blending cultural studies and the history of communication technology, Sterne follows modern technologies back through a historical labyrinth. Along the way, he encounters capitalists and inventors, musicians and philosophers, embalmers and grave robbers, doctors and patients, deaf children and their teachers, professionals and hobbyists, folklorists and tribal singers. The Audible Past tracks the connections between the history of and the defining features of modernity: from developments in medicine, physics, and philosophy to the tumultuous shifts of industrial capitalism, colonialism, urbanization, modern technology, and the rise of a new middle class. A provocative history of sound, The Audible Past challenges theoretical commonplaces such as the philosophical privilege of the speaking subject, the visual bias in theories of modernity, and static descriptions of nature. It will interest those in cultural studies, media and communication studies, the new musicology, and the history of technology.

The book considers sounds and music as experienced in such diverse settings as shop floors, laboratories, clinics, design studios, homes, and clubs, across an impressively broad range of historical periods and national and cultural contexts. Science has traditionally been understood as a visual matter, a study which has historically been undertaken with optical instruments such as slides, graphs, and telescopes. This book questions that notion powerfully by illustrating how sounds have always been a part of human experience, shaping and transforming the world in which we live in ways that often go unnoticed. Sounds and music, the articles argue, are embedded in the fabric of everyday life, art, commerce, and politics in ways which impact our perception of the world. Through a diverse set of case studies, articles illustrate how sounds—from the sounds of industrialization, to the sounds of automobiles, to sounds in underwater music and hip-hop, to the sounds of nanotechnology—give rise to new forms listening practices. In addition, the book discusses the rise of new public problems such as noise pollution, hearing loss, and intellectual property and privacy issues that stem from the spread and appropriation of new sound and music-related technologies, analog and digital, in many domains of life.

They are presented method by method because each one involves a characteristic set of beliefs and it is important to identify those beliefs i order to avoid applying inappropriate techniques that produce irrelevant data. The question of how you decide what method to adopt is addressed in the second part of the book, in which given compositions rather than given analytical methods form the starting point. The analyses in this section are each designed to highlight a different aspect of analytical procedure.

Soon after its initial publication, the Harvard Dictionary of Music by Willi Apel was firmly established as a standard and essential resource for everyone concerned with music. The product of exceptional scholarship, it was praised as being comprehensive, concise, authoritative, scholarly, and enjoyable. Leopold Stokowski wrote, I so often consult your dictionary of music, and with such never failing enlightenment, that I must offer you my thanks for your unique book, so profound and so broad in scope ... The vast scholarship... is of immeasurable value to the whole world of music. The Christian Science Monitor called it a highly satisfying book of musical knowledge, in which basic definitions are given with fine intellectual integrity, and musical facts are carefully separated from plausible deductions or theories. For this second edition the dictionary has been thoroughly revised, updated, and substantially enlarged. Mr. Apel and eightyeight other eminent music scholars have contributed new articles and revised old ones completely. The already comprehensive list of accurate definitions has grown measurably and it now even includes nothus, pyiba, and meringue. In the greatly expanded coverage of ethnomusicology, cumbia-an Afro-Panamanian dance form - and Vietnam are only two of the new entries. Additionally, all the general information about individual countries has been revised and the discussion of both theory and history has been amply increased. Developments of the last two decades are given special attention with particular emphasis on compositional techniques, including electronic music and serial music. Individual compositions, representative of every type from every era, are described. The bibliography following each article, a unique feature of the first edition, has been updated and expanded. There are fifty percent more illustrations than in the first edition, including explicit drawings of instruments, clear music examples, diagrams, charts and a full-page outline of the history of music. An extensive list of the most important music libraries and collections throughout the world with summaries of their significant musical holdings is a valuable part of the dictionary. The section on historical editions now lists fifty-three collections of music and briefly describes each volume within each collection. The Harvard Dictionary of Music, Second Edition, Revised and Enlarged, is the result of imaginative, specialized, modern, and reliable music scholarship. Containing nearly 1000 pages of precise and accessible information on all musical subjects, it offers over fifty percent more material than the first edition. It is essential not only to the scholar of music, the professional performer, and the practicing amateur, but to everyone who has ever anticipated the pleasure of a weekly musical broadcast, purchased a favorite recording, or truly enjoyed a concert.

We introduce the concept of soundscape as a modality for integrating this work into an anthropological approach. We trace its history as a response to the technological mediations and listening practices emergent in modernity and note its absence in the anthropological literature. We then trace the history of technology that gave rise to anthropological recording practices, film sound techniques, and experimental sound art, noting productive interweavings of these threads. After considering ethnographies that explore relationships between sound, personhood, aesthetics, history, and ideology, we question sound's supposed ephemerality as a reason for the discipline's inattention. We conclude with a call for an anthropology that more seriously engages with its own history as a sounded discipline and moves forward in ways that incorporate the social and cultural sounded world more fully.

Here at last is a clear, comprehensive, and authoritative account that presupposes no special knowledge of music. Topics covered include the place of music in Greek life; instruments; rhythm; tempo; modes and scales; melodic construction; form; ancient theory and notation; and historical development. Thirty surviving examples of Greek music are presented in modern transcription with analysis, and the book is fully illustrated. Besides being considered on its own terms, Greek music is here further illuminated by being seen in ethnological perspective, and a brief Epilogue sets it in its place in a border zone between Afro-Asiatic and European culture. The book will be of value both to classicists and historians of music.

Traditional heritage documentation models face significant obstacles in systematically capturing oral traditions and inter-group cultural differences. The proposed comprehensive multimodal fusion framework integrates visual pattern analysis through convolutional neural networks, temporal cultural depiction via bidirectional LSTM networks, and semantic comprehension using transformer-based models. Collaborative fieldwork across five Li subgroups (Ha, Qi, Run, Sai, and Meifu) in Hainan Province documented 4,450 cultural samples, including traditional textiles, music, oral traditions, artifacts, and architectural heritage. The five-layer distributed system architecture employs pattern recognition, semantic indexing, and recommendation algorithms for scalable cultural preservation. Experimental results demonstrate remarkable 94.8% accuracy across Li subgroups, significantly outperforming traditional single-modality systems (CNN: 85.3%, RNN: 87.6%, Transformer: 89.4%). System implementation yielded unprecedented improvements in cultural transmission effectiveness: 73% increase in knowledge retention, 121% in skill transfer, and 280% in digital archiving abilities. Community participation increased exponentially, with 340% growth in active users and a 665% increase in monthly contributions. The system achieves robust operational performance with sub-200ms response times and 99.7% stability. User satisfaction and expert evaluation scores of 4.4 and 4.6, respectively, confirm reliable cultural preservation functionality. This framework establishes advanced benchmarks for computational heritage preservation methods, demonstrating the effective integration of technological innovation with ethnographic sensitivity for the sustainable documentation and transmission of minority cultures.

Using Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimation this work analyses how non-ESC related factors such as economic ties, population size, migration, and geographic proximity, diplomatic and political ties affect voting behaviour in the participating countries. The findings highlight geopolitical, economic, and diasporic dynamics underlying Eurovision voting patterns and contribute to broader discussions on cultural affinity and soft power in international relations.

She distinguished herself in various fields of musicology related to Tatar culture. Yulduz Isanbet was engaged in scientific, pedagogical and musical-educational work. All of these are given varying degrees of attention in this article. We mainly focus on her large-scale publications, considering them in the context of musical culture and education in Tatarstan from the 1970s and up to 2021. The works are systematized according to their content, structure and genre, revealing their novelty and significance in Tatarstan musicology. The analysis of Yulduz Isanbet’s works and the experience of the author’s communication with her teacher during the years of her study at the Kazan State Conservatory made it possible to formulate the principles underlying the musicologist’s scientific work. The article highlights the influence her father, the writer and folklorist Naki Isanbet, had on the development of these scientific principles. We define further ways of searching and studying Yulduz Isanbet’s heritage and make a suggestion to publish unpublished works by Yulduz and Naki Isanbet, indicating their storage locations. We also suggest publishing materials of the source studies, devoted to individual works of the musicologist.

This paper explores the rich epistemologies inherent in these traditions and examines the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their study and preservation. It critiques the pervasive epistemic bias in current AI technologies, advocating for culturally attuned systems developed through ethical community engagement, co-design, and culturally informed data collection. The paper presents case studies that illustrate how AI, when developed with bias mitigation strategies, can provide insightful analysis and support for diverse musical forms. Furthermore, it addresses the ethical considerations surrounding data sovereignty, informed consent, and equitable benefit sharing. Finally, the paper envisions the future of African music epistemology in the digital age, highlighting both the potential for AI to enrich musical landscapes and the critical challenges posed by digital divides, algorithmic bias, and cultural exploitation. The call is for an African-led approach to AI development that champions innovation, upholds cultural integrity, and ensures epistemic justice.

A general overview of feature and documentary films about musicians reveals diverse ways of representing individuality and the inner world of a character, as well as identifying a certain personality type. Surveying the images of musicians in a fairly representative number of films, the author proposes a typology based on the protagonist's relationship with music and, through music, with society: creative and innovative (“creators”); performing (“reciters-translators”, “readers-dialogists”, “psychosomatics”, “dictators”, “divas”); intuitive-spiritual (“mediums”).

Despite its growth, there has been a gap in the literature regarding its contemporary appeal, especially with respect to the works of modern African art music composers. Anchored on postcolonial theory, this study investigates the contemporary ideas shaping African art music composition by exploring the works of Seun Owoaje, a Nigerian composer known for his innovative integration of African musical idioms with Western structures. It aims to identify stylistic elements, thematic concerns, and compositional techniques employed by Seun Owoaje in his vocal and instrumental works. Adopting a qualitative design, data were sourced through in-depth oral interviews with the composer, coupled with analysis of his selected compositions. Seun Owoaje's music is informed by open-mindedness, creative ethnomusicology, social commentary, and inspiration from non-musical experiences. His works exhibit a deliberate blending of diverse musical traditions, reflect Yoruba cultural values, and offer philosophical insight on contemporary social issues through music commentary. The study contributes to the understanding of African art music as a platform for cultural reclamation and modern artistic expression, while providing valuable insights to teachers of music composition regarding blending innovative thinking with musical devices in the training of African art music composers. Research-based compositions should also be encouraged to blend indigenous elements with formal music training to ensure authenticity and innovation.

Drawing from both research literature and personal experience, the study involved planning and delivering violin lessons designed to foster ecoliteracy in young people. By focusing on the intersection of environmental and folk music education, the project aimed to develop a closer relationship between students and their environment: in particular, a sense of place. Two violin students, aged 12 and 14, were selected as participants for the study. Data was collected through informal post-lesson conversations, which were audio-recorded and transcribed, alongside lesson observations and reflections, then analysed using thematic analysis. The key themes that emerged were: Oral Tradition, Connection to Place, Instruments, Teaching Environment, and Student Development. Examining the students' experiences provided insights into how instrumental music teachers can incorporate ecoliteracy into their pedagogy. This study offers practical suggestions to foster ecoliteracy, such as the use of oral learning, improvisation based on natural sounds, and exploration of local music.

In both Denmark and Norway, there is a call for a cultural canon and a fixed subject content in schools based on the belief that society needs glue and common references. At the same time, a diverse society must safeguard the cultural identity of different groups. Does this mean that culture is fragmented? This question initiated the conference “Glue or solvent? Cultural heritage in the Nordic countries between familiarity and strangeness”, bringing Danish and Norwegian teacher educators together in the spring of 2023. The articles in this issue are based on contributions from the conference, which took place at Vartov, the centre of the network Grundtvigsk Forum, at Rådhuspladsen – the City Hall Square – in Copenhagen. Around this square, we find symbolic expressions of both community and conflict in Danish culture – with influential traditions such as Grundtvigianism and Brandesianism, which also remind us of the Norwegian goal formulation “Christian and humanist heritage and tradition”. The articles in this issue will explore and challenge cultural heritage in the Danish and Norwegian contexts. Keywords: Cultural heritage, common values, lifestance positions, Denmark, Norway, Grundtvigianism, Brandesianism

The discussion is based on what can be described as a type of cultural heritage history, namely the narrative of the history of humanism that has dominated Norwegian KRLE textbooks, and which centers around the emergence of rationality, human dignity, and democracy and rights. The article shows how thematizing the historical genealogy of such common values and ideals is challenging, and that a key reason for this has to do with questions of ownership. The article argues that, despite these challenges, the history of these types of values should be thematized in the subject. The reason has to do with the fact that such values and ideals are inevitably understood in the light of historical development, and thus that stories about them are already present in the classroom. The absence of a historical perspective means that the students are not given the opportunity to challenge these narratives. The article argues that such critical reflection requires that the KRLE discipline offers narratives that are richer and more complex, and in a better way account for this development than the existing narratives. We further argue that such a narrative needs a point of orientation that is relevant to the society to be understood, and that it should take place within the framework of a type of history of ideas. Finally, we will give some very brief examples of how to make such narratives more complex. Keywords: cultural heritage, common values, history, narratives, humanism
