Setting her investigation within the shifting landscape of neoliberal welfare reform in the Lombardy region of Italy, Andrea Muehlebach tracks the phenomenal rise of voluntarism in the wake of the state's withdrawal of social service programs. Using anthropological tools, she shows how socialist volunteers are interpreting their unwaged labor as an expression of social solidarity, with Catholic volunteers thinking of theirs as an expression of charity and love. Such interpretations pave the way for a mass mobilization of an ethical citizenry that is put to work by the state. Visiting several sites across the region, from Milanese high schools to the offices of state social workers to the homes of the needy, Muehlebach mounts a powerful argument that the neoliberal state nurtures selflessness in order to cement some of its most controversial reforms. At the same time, she also shows how the insertion of such an anticapitalist narrative into the heart of neoliberalization can have unintended consequences.

Communitarians call for a re-awakening of civic pride and a new awareness of the values and institutions which help sustain us through the uncertainties of the modern world - marriage, schools, the family, neighbourhoods and religious groups.

The article is based on empirical research carried out in two stages. The first stage investigated the formation and development of the main systematic immigration reform law (the Turco–Napolitano Act passed in 1998), while the second analysed the formation and development of the 'reform of the reform' approved by the centre-right government (the Bossi–Fini Act passed in 2002). Although the research found a degree of convergence between the immigration policies of the two governments, it also revealed a discrepancy in the decision-making style of the two reforms: the one of the centre-left was based more on bargaining between government and opposition, while for the centre-right it was more the result of a unilateral move; the first was more governmental and open to consultation with civil society, the second was more political and sensitive to public opinion. To investigate variations over time, five main approaches to immigration and immigrants were identified: solidarist, functionalist, legalitarian, multiculturalist and identitarian.

Middle class parents value self-direction more highly than do working class parents; working class parents emphasize, instead, conformity to external proscription. Self-control is the pivotal parental value for the middle class, obedience for the working class. One plausible explanation of this difference between middle and working class parental values is that parents of both social classes value for their children the characteristics that seem most appropriate to the conditions of the parents' lives. The relationship between supervision and parental values is stronger for the working class, for only in the working class is any considerable proportion of men subjected to very close supervision. Nevertheless, the relationships are essentially the same in the two social classes.

Every advance in culture, … Migrations, with all the incidental collision, conflicts, and fusions of peoples and of cultures which they occasion, have been accounted among the decisive forces in history. Every advance in culture, it has been said, commences with a new period of migration and movement of populations. Present tendencies indicate that while the mobility of individuals has increased, the migration of people has relatively decreased. The consequences, however, of migration and mobility seem, on the whole, to be the same. In both cases the "cake of custom" is broken and the individual is freed for new enterprises and for new associations. One of the consequences of migration is to create a situation in which the same individual-who may or may not be a mixed blood-finds himself striving to live in two diverse cultural groups. The effect is to produce an unstable character-a personality type with characteristic forms of behavior. This is the "marginal man." It is in the mind of the marginal man that the conflicting cultures meet and fuse. It is, therefore, in the mind of the marginal man that the process of civilization is visibly going on, and it is in the mind of the marginal man that the process of civilization may best be studied.

The general message is that the growing frequency of so-called paradoxes in economic theory and of unsolved socioeconomic problems reflects that neither economic theory nor policy has been adapted to the fact that we have entered a new phase: the 'Learning Economy'. It is shown that in the learning economy the capacity to learn increasingly determines the relative position of individuals, firms and national systems. The growing polarisation in the OECD-labour markets is explained by the increasing importance of learning and the acceleration in the rate of change. Finally, it is argued that the learning economy will not be sustainable if these tendencies are not countered by a New New Deal which puts the focus on the distribution of capabilities to learn

Consequently, the argument will follow a three-part development: the first dedicated to technology as a driver of change, the second dedicated to rules as a driver of change, the third dedicated to action in the context - use - as a driver of change. In each of these moments, the underlying theories of change will be made explicit and these will be tested with the evidence we have on technology and society or on rules and social action in different public policy contexts. It provides strong arguments supporting the non reductionist stance toward the protection and irreplaceable space that is left - ontologically - and should be acknowledged - institutionally and organizationally - to the autonomy of human agency.

To some readers, the phrase social action may evoke the idea of people taking the initiative for change at the political and economic level of society; these are social actions that take days, months, or years to accomplish. The kinds of actions this book is concerned with are, instead, much more rapid and minute. They are actions performed on the fly, in the back and forth of ordinary interaction; they are actions like questions, answers, complaints, compliments, and requests. As a species of social action, requests serve a basic function: getting help from others. Every day in a community, people make hundreds of requests of one another, most of which are small requests for mundane things such as passing an item or performing a service around the house. Another way of thinking about requests is as the exercise of social influence in our everyday encounters, the kind of influence with tangible effects on the subsequent conduct of those around us. The book reports on an extensive study of requests “in the wild,” through the methodical observation and analysis of naturally occurring social interactions captured on video. Using the case of everyday requests among speakers of Italian, the book shows that our resources for social action are organized in systems—that is, in coherent sets of interdependent practices. It argues that such systems are part of the social order, as they shape, constrain, and enable interaction between people.

This study of two northern Italian neighborhoods, San Siro in Milan and Veronetta in Verona, reveals that the ability to engage with a neighborhood's distinctive identity either catalyzes or constrains collective action. Both areas are marginalized spaces associated with urban decay, yet host an intense presence of diverse civil society groups. Despite similar demographic, urbanistic, and social attributes, Veronetta features a cohesive grassroots movement organically connected to the neighborhood, while San Siro exhibits fragmented social actors and uncoordinated efforts. Employing the analytical categories of “identity of place” and “placebased identity,” this research undertakes multisited ethnography to compare the sociospatial dynamics of urban movements. It argues that the identity of place and social ties enabled by it are sources of collective identity guiding collective action. For actors operating in peripheral urban settings, the ability to tap into the identity of place and to integrate place-based belongings lead to the creation of a movement space, while failure to do so results in sporadic interventions.

The choice of the clinical situation on which to focus, among others, is somewhat ambiguous in my mind: the case in question seems to me to be particularly representative of some specific dynamics of the couple dual that are often observed in psychological work with those who seek help from a crisis that is first individual, but which finds its privileged expression in the couple bond. Although paradigmatic, this situation retains its uniqueness: the constant tension in the attempt to combine complexity and unity can be seen as the fuel of this work. In continuity with Michele Minolli's theory of the I-Subject, and in particular with its application to the study of couple investment, I would like to follow the exciting vicissitudes of the two I-Subjects as they struggle with the precarious balance between fidelity to one's own configuration and the attraction of exploring new existential solutions. Such solutions, which are always open to renegotiation, can only be understood from a relational/interactionist perspective: they cannot be entirely conceived in the realm of the intrapsychic, but are introduced by the other of the couple and, in the name of investment in the other, can find an active energy that sustains their search. In this sense, the couple relationship can be understood as a potential context for individual growth and emancipation; it is an adult relationship in which each individual continues to become. It is therefore not a goal, but a promising opportunity for the individual evolutionary process of its members.

Building on a comparative review of fifty national and international case studies of immigrant inclusion and integration initiatives, it distils a set of best practices readily adaptable to other contexts. These insights are then juxtaposed against European, Italian, and Campanian regional strategies, and correlated with demographic trends and their impacts on the local housing market. Drawing on this analysis, the study offers design guidelines for urban plans that foster intercultural coexistence and community resilience (Council of Europe, 2003). Finally, it presents a concrete urban-design proposal for Castel Volturno—one of four municipalities along the Domitian coast that since the 1990s has attracted a growing migrant population—addressing its challenges of social fragmentation, urban decay, and environmental degradation.
