Description

This cluster of papers focuses on Prurigo Pigmentosa, an inflammatory skin disease characterized by distinctive clinicopathological features. The papers cover various aspects including clinicopathological studies, treatment outcomes, association with ketogenic diet and bariatric surgery, epidemiology, and potential links to Helicobacter pylori infection. They also discuss the histopathological characteristics and the efficacy of treatments such as doxycycline. The cluster reflects a comprehensive exploration of this underdiagnosed disease.

The third edition (circa 2700 pages) is two unequal volumes of the size of the second edition, and, when stacked, these two volumes are less than 1 in shorter than the first two editions combined. Each volume has a color atlas of 60 pages. These eight color atlases are, for some curious reason, identical in each volume. Certainly, the thickness (over 1 cm) and, presumably, the price could have been reduced by omitting the duplicate photographs. The first 20 pages (atlases 1 and 2) consist of largely clear, seemingly new, color photographs. Atlas 3 is exactly reproduced from the second edition, save that some of the photographs are arranged differently on the pages. Many of the photographs in this and the subsequent atlases are so small as to be of

Kerr, is a monumental, six-volume otolaryngology text. It has been a standard work among British otolaryngologists since 1952 and is respected highly by otolaryngologists throughout the world. The new edition is two volumes longer than the fourth edition owing to the inclusion of a volume on pediatric otolaryngology and a separate volume on the ear. The additional materials covered, and updating of subjects addressed in previous editions, render this text current and authoritative in most aspects. Its British origins produce a slightly different slant and minor practice differences when compared with standard, multivolume American otolaryngology texts such asOtolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, edited by C. W. Cummins, C. J. Krause, D. E. Schuller, J. M. Fredrickson, and L. A. Harker (CV Mosby, 1986), andOtolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery, edited by M. M. Paparella and D. A. Shumrick (WB Saunders, 1980). Like these

Kromayer, in 1905 (Noel Robbins, written communication, December 1981). Kromayer called the punch the "zylindermesser" and reported that it gave excellent results for making deep punches in the skin to remove all kinds of scars in various skin disorders. However, this technique for "scarless surgery" with knives did not appeal to his colleagues and was soon forgotten (Noel Robbins, written communication, December 1981). The design of the Keyes punch is similar to the punches that were used in woodworking and leather shops and to the industrial punches called theArch punch, all of which were designed with a thick wall to withstand the blow of a mallet. This much force was

While it continues to serve as a superb reference textbook, the fourth edition manages to present even more information in a significantly more accessible manner. To parallel and enhance the quality of the text, several changes have been made in format, structure, and design. Perhaps the first thing noticed is the conspicuous absence of the atlas. All of the original color plates and many more have been incorporated into their appropriate chapters throughout the two-volume book. This is a far more efficient arrangement. The text has been reformatted with divisions that are more clearly marked and allow quick reference to a particular section of interest. The layout of the table of contents is also easier to read, with chapter titles in a single column and in bold

In 1863, seven years after the publication of Addison's second, but best known, description of the disease now called pernicious anemia, Habershon1wrote concerning this condition: Many patients at an early stage completely recover under the influence of bracing air and a nutrient and stimulating diet. Other early investigators of the disease, as Biermer2in 1872, and Pepper,3in 1875, appreciated the desirability of prescribing easily digested foods as a form of medication, but no greater emphasis was placed on the value of Osler,4however, in 1885, mentioned that cases [of pernicious

Dr. Sutton had the task of bringing a former edition up to date, but in so doing the book had to be entirely rewritten. There is a splendid bibliography which gives the advanced student a fine framework of literature for more detailed information when needed. The book is entirely acceptable as an advanced text, particularly for residents in dermatology. I do not believe it should be recommended for the undergraduate student except for assigned reading

The book is divided into six major sections (incorporating 28 chapters with two appendices). The first seven chapters deal with the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the integument. Individual chapters discuss specific disorders that are common and remarkably uncommon (Bonnevie-Ullrich-Turner syndrome and orf). A splendid section on "Dermatology in Internal Medicine" (579 pages) is practically a complete book unto itself. It is the best of any similar effort I have encountered. There is an incredible amount of information in this book—in fact it is almost overwhelming as one sits down to contemplate its breadth and depth. In spot reading many chapters the writing by a variety of authors bears some basic similarities in style and syntax. This could have been coincidental, but I rather suspect it was the product of fairly taut

This fourth edition is their masterpiece. It weighs a record 20 pounds, is nearly 3000 pages long, and has elegant new integrated color photographs and, at long last, an enhanced index. Most important, the authors show renewed enthusiasm for their job with extensive revisions, new concepts, and numerous up-to-date references. This famous textbook has developed in parallel with the blossoming of dermatology over the last half century. As dermatologists seldom did before, today they share complex and important concerns with biochemists, microbiologists, immunologists, oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, and physicists. The specialty continues to succeed, as this book demonstrates, because the underpinning bioscience is flourishing.

It is indeed a credit to the six editors and 149 contributors that it emerges with such clarity and uniformity of writing. The format, compared with most large dermatologic texts, is not much different, but this volume does have an advantage in that the table of contents appearing on the first few pages segregates general subjects into six parts and two appendices, these being subdivided into chapters devoted to individual or groups of cutaneous disorders. The six parts bear such designations as "biology and pathophysiology of the skin," "disorders primarily affecting the skin and mucous membranes," "dermatology in internal medicine," "disorders due to microbial agents," etc. This arrangement is helpful if one is searching for an entity but is not sure of its exact designation. One may at least be able to more easily find the appropriate chapter and pursue it from there.

This article uses Baron and Boris’s invitation to labor historians as a point of departure, but asks, in what ways do bodies matter for studies of people without work? Specifically, in what ways did bodies matter for unemployed working-class men in 1930s Britain? Using parliamentary papers and debates, published first-person narratives, and government documents, I demonstrate that prolonged unemployment was a bodily crisis for working-class men, who expected—and were expected—to direct their bodies and minds to productive labor. Critical Disability Studies scholars’ have emphasized the need to interrogate ableist norms that produce a “corporeal standard,” which for working-class men meant bodies and minds able to perform productive work. Ableist structures, policies, and practices, intersecting in the 1930s British case predominantly with gender and class identities and norms, challenged unemployed men, who experienced unemployment in ways that situated them outside the working-class masculine corporeal standard. To explore these issues, I focus on two closely linked concepts: fitness and employability. During the 1930s, British politicians, bureaucrats, and unemployed men assumed that men who had been without work for prolonged periods of time would not have the physical and mental fitness to be re-employed. I introduce the concept “embodying unemployment” to capture the relationships among discourses, bodily and emotional processes, and material conditions that shaped policy decisions, unemployed men’s experiences, and practices to enhance fitness and employability, highlighting the various perceptions of what caused unemployed men’s bodies and minds to deteriorate from the ableist norm and what strategies might slow or arrest the feared changes.

Methods: An online survey was distributed from February 2025 to March 2025 by the Clinical and Translational Research Unit at Ohio University. The survey was distributed via email and social media. Data on demographics, frequency of dermatological issues in practice, screening practices, self-efficacy, knowledge, and preferences for further education was collected. Results: One hundred sixty-seven healthcare providers in Ohio participated in this study. Importantly, 66.5% of participants were early career healthcare providers (10 years or less of experience). Participants were nurse practitioners (28.7%), physician assistants (15.6%), resident physicians (26.3%), and attending physicians (29.3%). Regarding diabetes technology, 61.1% of the sample stated they rarely encountered patients experiencing skin reactions due to diabetes technology. Notably, 55.7% of the sample failed the dermatology and diabetes knowledge test and only 41.9% of respondents reported moderate confidence in diagnosing diabetes dermatologic manifestations. Conclusion: This survey aims to identify education deficits in recognition and management of the diabetes dermatological manifestations among healthcare providers. The findings demonstrated current knowledge is insufficient, which may impact the quality of diabetes care and patient outcomes. Enhancing provider knowledge can lead to earlier diagnoses, more effective glycemic management, and improved patient outcomes by preventing dermatologic complications. Disclosure S. Beach: None. A.M. The condition is characterized by pruritic, erythematous papules that evolve into a distinct, net-like pattern of hyperpigmentation. Due to its rarity in non-Asian populations, prurigo pigmentosa is often underdiagnosed or misclassified as other hyperpigmented dermatoses. We present the case of a 33-year-old African-Canadian woman who developed prurigo pigmentosa following prolonged fasting, contributing to the limited literature on this condition in skin of color. This report aims to raise awareness of prurigo pigmentosa in underrepresented populations.
