Star Cruise (Malaysia) and Royal Caribbean Lines (USA) were selected as the brands and countries for the study. Respondents provided quality, attitude and purchase intention ratings. Contrary to prior evidence, CO does appear to be an important informational cue for consumers of services; CO effects were found to be stronger than brand effects for quality and attitude ratings, while brand was more significantly correlated with purchase intentions. A positive CO image compensated for a weak brand, suggesting that, where applicable, marketing efforts should emphasize an association with a positive CO perception. Conversely, a strong brand was not found to compensate for a negative CO perception; in this case, it would be appropriate to change the associated CO to one with a more positive image, as at least one major cruise line has already done.

This paper investigates OE and considers its effect on career development. OE is a world‐wide phenomenon, but has special significance in Australia and New Zealand, where it is undertaken as a “rite of passage” by many young people. The paper reports results from an interview study of 50 OEs undertaken by young New Zealanders. It focuses on predisposing personal and situational factors prompting OE, the unplanned and improvisational nature of OE, the main forms of OE, and its apparent consequences for personal development and subsequent careers. The evidence suggests that OE brings benefits but that the process is complex and unpredictable because of confounding forces such as non‐career travel agendas and personal relationships. The special value of OE to careers in current conditions requiring greater self‐direction, flexibility and internationalisation is emphasised.

Research … While it has been suggested that perceived value is the most important indicator of future purchase behavior for services, few studies have examined the underlying frame-work of perceived value. Research has also suggested the importance of identifying differences between first-time and repeat visitors. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to test the relationships between reputation, emotional response, monetary price, behavioral price, quality, perceived value, and repurchase intentions. Results from a survey of cruise line passengers revealed distinct differences between the antecedents of first-time visitors’ and repeat visitors’ perceived value. It was also found that quality was the best predictor of repurchase intentions for first timers, while perceived value was the best predictor for repeaters. Specific theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.

Its rapid expansion … Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the world. It is an increasingly important source of income, employment and wealth in many countries. Its rapid expansion has, however, had detrimental environmental (and socio‐cultural) impacts in many regions. In this article, I examine the main economic benefits and environmental impacts of tourism, and review the development of the international sustainable tourism agenda. While much of international tourism activity takes place within the developed world, this article will focus on the (economic) development of the industry in developing countries I conclude that new approaches to sustainable tourism development in these countries should not only seek to minimize local environmental impact, but also give greater priority to community participation and poverty alleviation. I argue, in particular, that more emphasis should be given to a ‘pro‐poor tourism’ approach at both national and international levels.

Since then, a rich body of research on applications of the experience economy concepts have appeared in the marketing literature. However, academic investigations on the measurement of tourism experiences are very recent. The purpose of this article is twofold: to identify the underlying dimensions of cruisers’ experiences and to investigate the relationships among cruisers’ experiences, satisfaction, and intention to recommend. Overall, findings of this study enhance the theoretical progress on the experiential concept in tourism and offer important implications for cruise marketers.

Similarly, investigation of tourists’ social contacts has mainly focused on the tourist—local community and tourist—service personnel dyads, while much less is known about tourist-to-tourist interactions. To fill this knowledge gap, this study has examined interaction between tourists on cruise vacations and its impact on the cruise experience and vacation satisfaction. An online survey is conducted with an American online panel ( n = 613). The findings reveal that the quality of C2C interaction has positive direct impacts on the cruise experience as well as indirect effects on vacation satisfaction, mediated by cruise experience. Moreover, the quality of C2C interaction has suppressor effects on the quantity of C2C interaction. The results call for the incorporation of C2C interaction as one component of the relationship marketing theory.

Operators increasingly take tourists to destinations threatened by climate change, with Antarctica and other polar regions as favourites and cruise ship and aircraft as main transport modes. The selling point is to see a destination before it disappears, a form of last chance tourism. This has been claimed to increase the environmental awareness of tourists and make them "ambassadors" for conservation and the visited destination. Antarctic cruise ship passengers tripled from 2000 to 2007. The paper finds that high levels of greenhouse gas emissions are created by cruise ship tourists in general, and especially high levels for those visiting the Antarctic, up to approximately eight times higher per capita and per day than average international tourism trips. A survey found no evidence for the hypothesis that the trips develop greater environmental awareness, change attitudes or encourage more sustainable future travel choices. Of the Antarctic cruise passengers surveyed, 59% felt that their travel did not impact on climate change; fewer than 7% had or might offset their emissions. Alternative opportunities for visitation to glacial/polar destinations that comply with the desire to reduce future emissions are discussed.

This study examines the dimensions of scuba diving motivations that influence satisfaction and revisits intention in marine and coastal tourism. A quantitative survey of 408 international tourists was conducted in three popular coastal provinces in Thailand (Phuket, Phang-Nga, and Krabi), employing structural equation modelling to analyze the relationships between scuba diving motivation dimensions, satisfaction and revisiting intention. The findings revealed that three motivation dimensions—tourism and diving offerings, ancillary attributes, and unspoiled diving destinations—primarily influenced satisfaction. Additionally, these three factors significantly predict the revisiting intention. This study contributes to the marine and coastal tourism literature by providing insights into the motivation dimensions impacting satisfaction and revisiting intention that can assist tourism destination managers in developing effective strategies for scuba tourism. To enhance scuba diving tourism in the Andaman Coast, destination managers should focus on improving the quality and diversity of diving offerings, such as unique dive sites and diving offerings and attributes. Additionally, providing high-quality ancillary services such as comfortable accommodations, convenient transportation, and excellent dining options is essential. To attract and retain tourists, it is crucial to preserve the pristine natural beauty and marine biodiversity of the region through sustainable tourism practices. By implementing these strategies, destinations can enhance visitor satisfaction, encourage repeat visits, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the marine ecosystem.

Although population-based metaheuristic algorithms have shown promising performance on this problem, they typically start from scratch without prior knowledge and rely on the optimization of a predefined objective function. This approach can be inefficient and may overlook popular points of interest (POIs), depending on the problem formulation. In this paper, we propose a Large Language Model (LLM)-augmented metaheuristic optimization framework to more effectively address the itinerary planning problem. The proposed method first leverages the extensive internal knowledge of an LLM to intelligently select tourist attractions based on user preferences. These selections are then integrated into a discrete Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to optimize the travel itinerary. During the optimization process, if the generated plans deviate from realistic constraints, the LLM dynamically adjusts the selection of POIs. Finally, the LLM integrates the optimized path and time allocation to generate a comprehensive itinerary. A case study conducted in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China, compares the proposed approach with a conventional PSO method and an LLM-only planning strategy. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority and practical value of the proposed LLM-augmented optimization framework.

Nove tehnologije i odgovorno poslovanje uz održivost pridonose razvoju turizma u Međimurskoj županiji, a to potvrđuju i nagrade dodijeljene međimurskom turizmu i Muzeju Međimurja Čakovec.

This study employs descriptive and comparative secondary data analysis based on available statistics and an extensive literature review to assess the sector’s development, resilience, and sustainability within global and national contexts. The findings confirm that tourism is a key pillar of Iceland’s economy, surpassing traditional export industries in value and generating significant employment opportunities. However, the sector’s volatility exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic and its dependence on international markets reveal structural vulnerabilities that threaten a sustainable future. Beyond economic considerations, this study critically engages with the growing pressures of over-tourism, seasonality, and environmental degradation, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas. Recent scholarship and policy shifts emphasise the need for sustainability indicators, equitable taxation mechanisms, and participatory governance to guide Iceland’s tourism development. This research highlights that balancing economic growth with environmental limits and community well-being is essential for building a more resilient and future-proof tourism model. These insights help inform policymakers, stakeholders, and researchers in aligning tourism strategies with sustainability and diversification goals.

It employs the notion of counterpublic to explore dyke cruising, both as a practice and as staged fantasies in the photographs of artists Tessa Boffin, Jill Posener, Ingrid Pollard, and Del LaGrace Volcano. The article examines why cruising – the search for intimacy, sex and belonging in public and a mode of producing space – became important to London dykes at this particular moment, when references to cruising appear in multiple lesbian anthologies, magazines and, more broadly, in visual culture. The photographs analysed here open a discussion about how different forms of public space (hypervisible, secluded, generic and semi-public spaces) impact on erotic desire. They illustrate that to intervene in public spaces, for example, around London landmarks and urban cemeteries, also involves intervening in the popular historical narratives of these sites. Counterpublics emerge here not only through the practice of cruising, but also by experimenting with popular historical narratives (by reimagining the tourist guide, statues and monuments and memory of the dead). The article argues that these experiments with history and fantasy contextualise cruising without overemphasising its liberatory potential. By creating a link between fantasy and reality, the staged encounters explore how we come to know and be a part of different types of public space. They also raise the question of what makes an imaginary, sexual or political, possible in a particular historical moment.

This research work takes a qualitative approach; uses critical incident technique (CIT) as the research method for investigating users’ perceptions toward applying generative AI tools for their itinerary planning tasks. The study reveals that the overall user perceptions are influenced by eight dimensions of generative AI applications: rationality, comprehensiveness, flexibility, personalization, precision, accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency. The research findings provide valuable advisory guidelines for those who try to optimize the user experience of GAI-enabled tour itinerary planning tools.

However, not all tourists respect the local culture, environment and laws of the destination. This study aims to explore and understand the behaviours of toxic tourists in Bali who engage in activities such as cultural disrespect, drug smuggling, cybercrime, murder, visa abuse and traffic violations. This research adopted qualitative approach and employed semi-structured interviews key-informants and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving local residents, community leaders, tourism stakeholders and law enforcement officers in Bali and observations as well as documentation of published news in reputed national news agencies. The findings reveal that toxic tourism poses a serious threat to the sustainability of the destination which divided into three dimensions including cultural integrity, legal framework, and social structure. This study presents a distinctive contribution and offers innovative insights into the interplay between cultural preservation, legal governance, and community resilience within mass tourism contexts. It reveals shortcomings in current tourism management practices in addressing toxic behaviours and proposes actionable recommendations, such as stricter law enforcement, community-led education programmes, and the incorporation of cultural sensitivity into tourism policies. These managerial implications provide a framework for destinations facing similar challenges. Additionally, the study advocates for longitudinal research to evaluate the long-term effects of toxic tourism and the effectiveness of mitigation strategies that advances both academic and practical understanding of sustainable tourism management.

These consumers represent a large untapped market segment whose behavioral patterns potentially differ fundamentally from experienced travelers. This study investigates the psychological mechanisms influencing Thai tourists’ intentions to choose cruise tourism, particularly among first-time travelers who lack prior experience. Drawing upon the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and extending it through frameworks such as Affective Forecasting and Construal Level Theory, this research introduces new constructs including onboard activity anticipation and experiential risk realism. Using multi-group Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), the study compares responses from cruise-experienced (n = 174) and cruise-inexperienced (n = 200) participants. Key findings reveal that novelty does not directly predict intention but acts as an affective primer, while onboard activities significantly shape behavioral intentions, especially among experienced travelers. Perceived risk also demonstrates experiential divergence—abstract and negligible among novices, but specific and influential among experienced participants. The results suggest that intention formation in tourism is moderated by experience and shaped by simulated cognition rather than memory. This highlights the need to refine behavioral tourism models and tailor marketing strategies to consumers’ experiential backgrounds.

The research aims to evaluate the extent to which gender diversity, equality, and inclusion are perceived, practiced, and institutionalized onboard. A structured Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) survey was administered to the crew members across various departments and ranks, investigating perceptions of discrimination, career advancement, workplace safety, and the implementation of gender-sensitive policies. Results indicate persistent gender disparities, particularly in areas such as promotion opportunities, emotional burden, and reporting of harassment. While overall attitudes toward diversity appeared positive, a significant proportion of female respondents reported experiencing bias, isolation, and unequal treatment despite possessing equivalent qualifications. Statistical analysis, including Chi-square tests and Exploratory Factor Analysis, identified three dominant perception dimensions: structural bias, emotional strain, and safety concerns. A notable gap emerged between institutional policies and actual behaviours or trust in enforcement mechanisms. The authors contribute to the field by designing a context-specific KAP instrument, applying robust statistical methodologies, and offering actionable recommendations to maritime organizations. These include enhancing reporting systems, improving mentorship opportunities, and institutionalizing training on unconscious bias. This study provides empirical evidence to support policy reforms and cultural shifts aimed at fostering gender-inclusive environments onboard maritime cruise vessels.

In the phase of assessing the suitability and potential of these resources for tourism valorization, usually only experts and the tourism industry are involved, neglecting the views of key stakeholders: tourists and locals. Purpose The main purpose of the research is to identify the indicators that determine the potential/suitability of resources to become tourist attractions and to assess the weight that each indicator has in the eyes of tourists and locals. Furthermore, we examine whether there are significant differences between tourists and locals in this respect that deserve special attention. Approach and methods A set of indicators was compiled to assess the suitability of resources from previous research on tourism valorization. Surveys were carried out among tourists and locals in Piran, the most popular Slovenian tourist municipality, and the weights assigned to the indicators were compared between the two groups. Findings Authenticity, accessibility, uniqueness, and preservation were identified as the most important indicators for assessing the potential/suitability of resources to be developed into attractions. The “Relevance to the community” indicator was identified as the most problematic, as tourists and locals attribute quite different importance to it, which can lead to conflicts in tourism development. In addition to the differences between stakeholders, some distinctions were also identified between the subsamples of each group. Policy implications Policy‐makers should devote more time and energy to involving and empowering the local population in the process of resource valorization. Inclusive destination management can contribute significantly to the quality of the tourism experience and thus to the competitiveness of the destination, as well as to a positive attitude of the local population towards tourism. The importance of authenticity suggests that the destination should be more inclusive of the hinterland, which has retained a high degree of authenticity. This would also alleviate current congestion in the overcrowded areas of the destination and diversify the offer.

Toutefois, …

Banyuwangi Regency has strong potential in coastal tourism, with Boom Marina Beach emerging as a leading destination undergoing rapid development. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused fluctuations in tourist visits and heightened competition among destinations. This study explores how tourist attractions and facilities at Boom Marina Beach affect visitor satisfaction, with visiting decisions acting as a mediating factor. A quantitative method using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with WarpPLS was applied. Data were collected from 130 visitors through purposive sampling. The results reveal that tourist attractions and facilities significantly affect visiting decisions and tourist satisfaction. Moreover, visiting decisions mediate the relationship between attractions, facilities, and satisfaction. The study is grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), which explains how perceptions of attractions and facilities influence tourist intentions and behaviors. The findings contribute to the theoretical development of tourist behavior models and offer practical implications for destination management. It is recommended that managers improve the quality of attractions and facilities, supported by effective marketing and infrastructure development from the local government. Future research is encouraged to explore additional variables such as destination image and tourist experience to provide deeper insights.

The review considered relevant papers to conduct a comparative analysis, revealing both agreement and disagreement regarding reform pace, governmental roles, and civil society engagement. Areas for improvement include original research, a more rigorous conceptual framework, and deeper sector-specific analysis. Threats to successful implementation include political viability and institutional capacity. Ultimately, the review underscores the need for further empirical research, a more nuanced understanding of civil society’s role, and a more thorough examination of sector-specific issues to enhance the effectiveness of a phased reform approach within the complex Philippine context.
