David Levering Lewis's narrative, filled with accounts of some of the greatest battles in world history, reveals how cosmopolitan, Muslim al-Andalus flourished-a beacon of cooperation and tolerance-while proto-Europe floundered in opposition. At the beginning of the eighth century, the Arabs brought a momentous revolution in power, religion, and culture to Dark Ages Europe. David Levering Lewis's masterful history begins with the fall of the Persian and Roman empires, followed by the rise of the prophet Muhammad and the creation of Muslim Spain. Five centuries of engagement between the Muslim imperium and an emerging Europe followed, from the Muslim conquest of Visigoth Hispania in 711 to Latin Christendom's declaration of unconditional warfare on the Caliphate in 1215. Lewis's narrative, filled with accounts of some of the greatest battles in world history, reveals how cosmopolitan, Muslim al-Andalus flourished-a beacon of cooperation and tolerance between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity-while proto-Europe, defining itself in opposition to Islam, made virtues out of hereditary aristocracy, religious intolerance, perpetual war, and slavery. A cautionary tale, God's Crucible provides a new interpretation of world-altering events whose influence remains as current as today's headlines.

[T]hey constitute a basic element of his worldview (196). In all three major works, Gower demonstrates the kind of proliferation of detail (196) and propensity for symbolism in describing and classifying sin that is characteristic of late medieval and renaissance culture. For instance, Gower's references to alchemy and astrology are reminiscent of the classical linkage of the sins with their planets and metals. Likewise, Gower's association of the sins with particular animals and diseases (especially in the MO) demonstrates his systematic approach to life. [CvD]

Those consequences cannot be fully understood without a clear understanding of the symbolic construction of the Spanish national imaginary, including the symptoms that historically have been identified as threats to its coherence. The chapter develops the argument that for this turn to be effective it is crucial to question the fundamental fantasies that lay at the core of the hegemonic notion of “Spanishness”, because the realm of fantasy is where statehood binds its subjects. Such a questioning would in turn lead to the disclosure of the explicit and implicit rejections that the normalcy of the State (and the state of normalcy) both requires and predicts. The final question is: if a different intellectual field is built, where not only the game is different but also the way the game is played is different as well, who will be in attendance and who will be keeping score±

Challenging the idea of this period as a cultural void for Galician theatre, it shows how CeA staged important performances in Galician, serving as a space for identity and subtle resistance. Using rare and unpublished documentation, the study reconstructs CeA's repertoire and highlights its cultural and political relevance. By analyzing authors, themes, and audience engagement, it reveals CeA's key role in preserving Galician language and culture. The article also calls for more attention to 20th-century Galician theatre and the often-overlooked role of choral and folkloric groups in sustaining memory, identity, and resistance under repression.

The inventory work carried out by Joan Antoni Forcadell on his personal archive at the Arxiu Comarcal del Montsià has brought to light the original manuscripts. This note presents an initial overview and emphasizes the need for an in-depth philological study. The materials, rich and varied, shed new light on the work of one of the most prominent authors of twentieth-century Catalan and Spanish literature.

Artistic similarities between … Juan de Flandes was a Netherlandish-trained artist who immigrated to Castile in the late fifteenth century. There is no documentary evidence for his early life and training. Artistic similarities between his works and contemporary painters in Flanders have led scholars to hypothesize about connections with prominent artists there. In contrast, Juan de Flandes’s career in Spain is well documented from his first appearance in the court financial records of Queen Isabel of Castile on 12 July 1496 until the painter’s death in 1519. He remained in Castile for the entirety of these years, working first as court painter to the queen and then after her death in 1504 as a contributor to major altarpiece projects. While the general outline and scope of Juan de Flandes’s career is well known, the lack of any signed paintings and his collaboration with Isabel’s other court artists have complicated the ability of art historians to come to consensus regarding the attribution of specific works. This is especially true for the Retablo de Isabel, a collection of small panel paintings depicting the life of Christ. Much scholarly attention has also been paid to the Miraflores Altarpiece, a polyptych attributed to Rogier van der Weyden that exists in two versions: the first located in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin and the other divided between the Capilla Real in Granada and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Technical analysis of the panels revealed that the Granada-New York panels are the copy, and that this work was made during Isabel’s reign by one of her court artists (some scholars have debated if the artist was Juan de Flandes or Michel Sittow). The historical significance of Isabel of Castile and the high quality of Juan de Flandes’s paintings has led to his inclusion in several exhibitions and catalogues. However, Juan de Flandes’s position as neither completely Spanish nor Netherlandish has led to a somewhat marginal position within the field and the discourse of its geographic subspecialties.

Evidence … Military Orders in the Iberian Peninsula in the Middle Ages were greatly involved in both the processes of conquest and subsequent transformation of the territories seized from Islamic rule. Evidence of this involvement is still visible today through solid and long-lasting buildings raised in response to the new needs of the dominant Christian society. The most significant were fortresses, and all their variants, followed by the temples of various sizes and categories. However, there were also other lesser-known constructions including mills, hospitals, houses of the commandery, and houses of agricultural domains. This study, based on written and archaeological sources, focuses on the constructions linked to the Military Orders, especially those of the Orders of Santiago, Calatrava, and St. John throughout the Kingdom of Castile between the 12th and 15th centuries. This analysis thus delves into the temporal sequence and regional variations of these features that not only led to a transformation of the landscape but also reflected changes in the framework of a particular type of society affected by power relations, technological evolution, available resources and wealth, as well as by its mentality and identity. Founded on data gleaned through basic research, this study thus attempts to reconstruct, among other aspects, this historical development by identifying the operational sequence which began with the procurement of raw materials, passing through the construction processes, and the application of different techniques. The study has likewise placed a special emphasis on the alarifes and the final results of their duties by analysing their choices of construction techniques and their functions.

In the first moment of our analysis, attention is drawn to the reception of French Arthurian texts in culture with sociocultural affinities, Galician-Portuguese, and in a coeval or very close epoch to that in which the respective texts originate. In the second moment of our analysis, attention is drawn to the reception, in a modern epoch, of several Western medieval texts in an Eastern culture, Romanian, with different features from that which originates the texts.
