The authors suggest that one of the familiar aims of practical work, teaching for the development of ‘experimental skills’, is best regarded as having a distinct knowledge base linked to the understanding of scientific evidence. The significance and value of an understanding of evidence for employment in science, engineering and in regard to scientific literacy in the community is discussed. A content for the knowledge base linked to evidence is proposed and methods of teaching it considered. The authors conclude that while various teaching methods can be used, practical work has a key role in the teaching of evidence provided that the type of practical work is selected carefully with a clear purpose in mind.

This technology has been applied in many sectors such as medicine, industry, education, video games, or tourism. Perhaps its biggest area of interest has been leisure and entertainment. Regardless the sector, the introduction of virtual or augmented reality had several constraints: it was expensive, it had poor ergonomics, or implied too much work to create contents. Recent technological innovations, including the rapid adoption of smartphones by society, have facilitated the access to virtual reality and augmented reality of anyone. In addition, several large companies like Apple, Facebook, Samsung, and Magic Leap, among others, have increased their investment to make these technologies to improve their accessibility within the next few years. Educational institutions will benefit from better accessibility to virtual technologies; this will make it possible to teach in virtual environments that are impossible to visualize in physical classrooms, like accessing into virtual laboratories, visualizing machines, industrial plants, or even medical scenarios. The huge possibilities of accessible virtual technologies will make it possible to break the boundaries of formal education.

Applying the approaches of digital transformation to the HEI domain is an emerging field that has aroused interest during the recent past, as they allow us to describe the complex relationships between actors in a technologically supported education domain. The objective of this paper is to summarize the distinctive characteristics of the digital transformation (DT) implementation process that have taken place in HEIs. The Kitchenham protocol was conducted by authors to answer the research questions and selection criteria to retrieve the eligible papers. Nineteen papers (1980–2019) were identified in the literature as relevant and consequently analyzed in detail. The main findings show that it is indeed an emerging field, none of the found DT in HEI proposals have been developed in a holistic dimension. This situation calls for further research efforts on how HEIs can understand DT and face the current requirements that the fourth industrial revolution forced.

However, they may not be sufficiently represented in educational institutions. In this regard, the research objectives are set, namely: organize a comparative analysis of several popular distance learning platforms (Moodle, Open edX and NEO LMS) in accordance with the criteria (system features, content support, content creation, user management, reporting system; conduct consultation with university teachers, during which they will highlight the benefits of distance education systems from the point of view of the teacher; and test students, who use the online platform for learning in order to clarify its impact on academic performance. While consulting with 40 teachers of Russian and Chinese universities (Moscow State University, Higher School of Economics, Peking University, Tsinghua University), the following advantages of distance platforms have been highlighted: greater freedom of access, lower education prices, the possibility of dividing the content of the e-course into modules, flexibility of education, the ability to keep up with modern pace of life, and the ability to define criteria for assessing knowledge. According to the results of testing, after working with the Moodle platform, students (300 people in total) with different academic performance have improved their results. The most significant improvement has occurred among students with “unsatisfactory” grades; more than 50% have improved their results. Analysis of distance learning systems, testing of students and consultation with teachers allow saying that such platforms help to make education more accessible and convenient. Besides, information technologies are introduced in the educational process. That is why it is important to implement such platforms in higher education.

Could the growth in online courses slow the rising cost of college and help solve the crisis of affordability? In this short and incisive book, William G. Bowen, one of the foremost experts on the intersection of education and economics, explains why, despite his earlier skepticism, he now believes technology has the potential to help rein in costs without negatively affecting student learning. As a former president of Princeton University, an economist, and author of many books on education, including the acclaimed bestseller The Shape of the River , Bowen speaks with unique expertise on the subject. Surveying the dizzying array of new technology-based teaching and learning initiatives, including the highly publicized emergence of "massive open online courses" (MOOCs), Bowen argues that such technologies could transform traditional higher education--allowing it at last to curb rising costs by increasing productivity, while preserving quality and protecting core values. But the challenges, which are organizational and philosophical as much as technological, are daunting. They include providing hard evidence of whether online education is cost-effective in various settings, rethinking the governance and decision-making structures of higher education, and developing customizable technological platforms. Yet, Bowen remains optimistic that the potential payoff is great. Based on the 2012 Tanner Lectures on Human Values, delivered at Stanford University, the book includes responses from Stanford president John Hennessy, Harvard University psychologist Howard Gardner, Columbia University literature professor Andrew Delbanco, and Coursera cofounder Daphne Koller.

Digital skills are becoming more pertinent throughout every context, particularly in the workplace. As a result, one of the key purposes for universities has shifted to preparing future managers to address issues and look for solutions, including information literacy as a vital set of skills. The research of educational technology advances in higher education is now being discussed and debated, with various laws, projects, and tactics being offered. Digital technology has been a part of the lives of today’s children from the moment they are born. There are still many different types of digital divisions that exist in our society, and they affect the younger generation and their digital futures. Today’s students do not have the same level of preparation for the technology-rich society they will have. Universities and teaching should go through a significant digital transformation to fulfill the demands of today’s generation and the fully digitized world they will be living in. The COVID-19 pandemic has quickly and unexpectedly compelled HEIs and the educational system to engage in such a shift. In this study, we investigate the digital transformation brought about by COVID-19 in the fundamental education of the younger generation. Additionally, the study investigates the various digital divides that have emerged and been reinforced, as well as the potential roadblocks that have been reported along the way. In this paper, the study suggests that research into information management must better address students, their increasingly digitalized everyday lives, and basic education as key focus areas.

Parallels are drawn in the context of the Russian Federation, aimed at meeting modern labor market requirements. The need to update the content of educational programs through the integration of digital competencies such as programming, working with big data and cybersecurity has been identified. It is shown that modern online platforms, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) technologies contribute to the personalization of educational trajectories and the creation of new learning formats such as virtual laboratories and smart classrooms. Strengthening the practical component of educational programs through interaction with employers is another important area of development. Joint programs, internships, and project-based training can narrow the gap between theory and practice. At the same time, it is noted that insufficient digital literacy of up to 40% of vocational education teachers slows down the introduction of innovative methods. Specific measures have been proposed to realize the potential of digitalization: the development of interdepartmental working groups to update the regulatory framework, the modernization of the technological infrastructure of educational institutions, the creation of regional digital hubs, professional development of teaching staff and the intensification of partnership with business.

The … The article is devoted to the analysis of the evolution of the content of general secondary education in Russia, starting from the Soviet period and ending with modern reforms. The author critically evaluates key approaches to the modernization of education, including the HUS programs, cultural and competence approaches, as well as the theory of the curriculum. Special attention is paid to the methodology of Vadim Semenovich Lesnev, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which is based on objective determinants of the formation of educational content related to human activity and the structure of scientific knowledge. Lednev V.S. considered the content as the result of a long evolution reflecting the laws of development of society and science. The article shows that modern changes in educational policy — the rejection of variability, the introduction of uniform federal standards and textbooks — indicate a return to the principles laid down in the Soviet system. The author emphasizes the need to preserve the unity of the educational space and criticizes the pseudo-liberal reforms that led to entropy in the education system. The consequences of the transition to a competence-based approach are analyzed, including a decrease in the quality of general education and a loss of consistency in curricula. In conclusion, it is proposed to return to the scientifically based methodology of Lesnev, which combines the social and personal goals of the school, ensuring a balance between traditions and modern requirements.

However, a significant gap remains concerning the practical relevance of education provided to students. Methods: This study adopted a qualitative methodology, employing the PRISMA approach for systematic literature review. Literature selection adhered to five strict inclusion criteria, limiting the review to English-language publications dated between 2019 and 2024. Ultimately, 36 sources were identified and analyzed. Results:The analysis revealed a persistent problem of insufficient practical training relevance within modern education systems. Commonly utilized practices included implementing dual education models and engaging employers in curriculum development and teaching roles. Conversely, the establishment and functioning of career centers were less frequently highlighted in existing literature, despite evidence demonstrating their significant role in developing specific practical skills. Conclusions:The findings underscored the critical importance of collaboration between educational institutions and employers for enhancing students' practical competence. Dual education and employer involvement emerged as prevalent practices, yet career centers require greater attention due to their potential for skill development. The study was limited by its exclusive focus on English-language sources and the stringent criteria inherent to the PRISMA methodology. Nevertheless, the research contributes valuable insights by systematically addressing the diverse mechanisms through which educational-employer cooperation positively impacts student competence development.
