Abstract This book examines the young science of psycholinguistics, which attempts to uncover the mechanisms and representations underlying human language. This interdisciplinary field has seen massive developments over the past decade, with a broad expansion of the research base, and the incorporation of new experimental techniques such as brain imaging and computational modelling. The result is that real progress is being made in the understanding of the key components of language in the mind. This book brings together the views of seventy-five leading researchers to provide a review of the current state of the art in psycholinguistics. The contributors are eminent in a wide range of fields, including psychology, linguistics, human memory, cognitive neuroscience, bilingualism, genetics, development, and neuropsychology. Their contributions are organised into six themed sections, covering word recognition, the mental lexicon, comprehension and discourse, language production, language development, and perspectives on psycholinguistics.

This systematic introduction to the concept of point of view in language explores the ways in which point of view intersects with and is shaped by ideology. It specifically focuses on the way in which speakers and writers linguistically encode their beliefs, interests and biases in a wide range of media. The book draws on an extensive array of linguistic theories and frameworks and each chapter includes a self-contained introduction to a particular topic in linguistics, allowing easy reference. The author uses examples from a variety of literary and non-literary text types such as, narrative fiction, advertisements and newspaper reports.

In Speaking, Willem Pim Levelt, Director of the Max-Planck-Institut fur Psycholinguistik, accomplishes the formidable task of covering the entire process of speech production, from constraints on conversational appropriateness to articulation and self-monitoring of speech. Speaking is unique in its balanced coverage of all major aspects of the production of speech, in the completeness of its treatment of the entire speech process, and in its strategy of exemplifying rather than formalizing theoretical issues.

This important handbook, with chapters written by leading experts in their fields, is concerned with the integration of verbal and nonverbal features in communication. Not just a collection of readings, it examines how verbal and nonverbal systems in communication work. Contributions combine solid reviews of the current research and findings as well as important theoretical and practical problems, with suggestions for future directions of research in the study of language and its use.

Austrian immigration authorities frequently reject the family reunion applications of immigrant workers. They justify their decisions not only on legal grounds but also on the basis of their own often prejudiced judgements of the applicants' ability to `integrate' into Austrian society. A discourse-historical method is combined with systemic-functionally oriented methods of text analysis to study the official letters which notify immigrant workers of the rejection of their family reunion applications. The systemic-functionally oriented methods are used in a detailed analysis of a sample of rejection letters while the discourse-historical method allows this analysis to be intertextually connected to other related genres of discourse and strategies of argumentation, and to the history of post-war immigration in Austria generally.

In 1972 Labov described the basic sociolinguistic question as the one ‘posed by the need to understand why anyone says anything’ (1972:207). Clearly the aim is very different from that of specifying the form of a grammar that generates all and only the well-formed sentences of a language. The goal is a theory of utterances. Moreover, the ‘why’ question can also be read as ‘what for’. What does anyone say anything for? I think we can safely say that this question places sociolinguistic analysis in a functional framework. If sociolinguistics looks for answers to the ‘why’ of saying something, it is seeking functional explanations.

An evaluation metric in Universal Grammar provides a means of selecting between possible grammars for a particular language. The evaluation metric as conceived in Chomsky & Halle (1968; henceforth SPE ) prefers the grammar in which only the idiosyncratic properties are lexically listed and predictable properties are derived. The essence of underspecification theory is to supply such predictable distinctive features or feature specifications by rule. Viewed in this way, the general idea of underspecification has always been a part of any theory of phonology that includes such an evaluation metric.

Recent investigations of the contribution that intonation makes to overall utterance and discourse interpretation promise new sources of information for the investigation of long-time concerns in natural-language processing. In Hirschberg and Pierrehumbert 1986 we proposed that intonational features such as phrasing, accmt pUuttTWIt, pilch rangt, and huIe represent important sources of information about the attmh0ru3l and the rntmt10rIJAl structures of discourse.I In this paper we examine the particular contribution of choice of tune, or int0ru3h0ru3l cantour, to discourse interpretation. In particular, we propose that a speaker (5) chooses a particular tune to convey a particular relationship between an utterance, currently perceived beliefs of a hearer or hearers (H), and anticipated contributions of subsequent utterances. We claim that these relationships are compositionalcomposed from the pitch aumts, phrase QCcmts, and bowndary tones that make up tunes. We further propose that the different aspects of tune meaning can be associated with different phonological domains. We assume the intorIJAtional phrase as our primary unit of meaning analysis. In the following discussion we put forward a first approximation of a compositional theory of tune interpretation.together with the phonological assumptions on which it is based and the evidence from which we have drawn our proposals. We assume Pierrehumbert's Wierrehumbert 198{);Beckman and Pierrehurnbert 1986a) theory of intonational description.which we describe in sections 2-3.In section 4 we present our general approach to intonational meaning. In sections 5 -7 we present the data upon which we base this account. In section 8 we explore avenues of further development for the theory and discuss implications for the study of discourse.2 Dimmslcn5 of IntOf1lltianai Variation PrrlimiruzriesIn describing intonation patterns, we distinguish str~, twu, phrasing, and PItch rar1Kt.5t-r~ refers to the rhythmic pattern or relative prominence of

To understand the role of language in public life and the social process in general, we need first a closer understanding of how linguistic knowledge and social factors interact in discourse interpretation. This volume is a major advance towards that understanding. Professor Gumperz here synthesizes fundamental research on communication from a wide variety of disciplines - linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropology and non-verbal communication - and develops an original and broadly based theory of conversational inference which shows how verbal communication can serve either between individuals of different social and ethnic backgrounds. The urgent need to overcome such barriers to effective communication is also a central concern of the book. Examples of conversational exchanges as well as of longer encounters, recorded in the urban United States, village Austria, South Asia and Britain, and analyzed to illustrate all aspects of the analytical approach, and to show how subconscious cultural presuppositions can damagingly affect interpretation of intent and judgement of interspeaker attitude. The volume will be of central interest to anyone concerned with communication, whether from a more academic viewpoint or as a professional working, for example, in the fields of interethnic or industrial relations.

Abstract A primary goal of contemporary theoretical linguistics is to develop a theory of the correspondence between sound (or gesture) and meaning. This sound-meaning correspondence breaks down completely in the case of ellipsis, and yet various forms of ellipsis are pervasive in natural language: words and phrases which should be in the linguistic signal go missing. How this should be possible is the focus of Jason Merchant's investigation. He focuses on the form of ellipsis known as sluicing, a common feature of interrogative clauses, such as in 'Sally's out hunting - guess what!'; and 'Someone called, but I can't tell you who'. It is the most frequently found cross-linguistic form of ellipsis. Dr Merchant studies the phenomenon across twenty-four languages, and attempts to explain it in linguistic and behavioural terms.

This monograph offers an in depth investigation of nominalization processes across languages e.g. Greek, Germanic, Romance, Hebrew, Slavic. Adopting and extending the view that category formation does not involve any lexical operation (recently put forth within the framework of Distributed Morphology), it shows how the behavior of nominals as opposed to that of verbs follows from general processes operating in specific syntactic structures, and is linked with the presence or absence of functional layers (T, D, Aspect, v). It further defines criteria on the basis of which the organization of nominal functional structure can be determined. Moreover, it demonstrates how nominals split into several types, across languages and within a language, depending on the number and the type of functional projections they include. Furthermore, it substantiates the hypothesis that aspects of the syntax of DPs of nominative-accusative languages are strikingly similar to aspects of the syntax of ergative languages and discusses aspects of the syntax of the perfect. The book targets researchers in theoretical linguistics, comparative syntax, morphology and typology. It can also be used as a foundation book on the morpho-syntax of nominals, argument structure and word formation.

Discourses in Place is essential reading for anyone with an interest in language and the way we communicate. Written by leaders in the field, this text argues that we can only interpret the meaning of public texts like road signs, notices and brand logos by considering the social and physical world that surrounds them. Drawing on a wide range of real examples, from signs in the Chinese mountains, to urban centres in Austria, Italy, North America and Hong Kong, this textbook equips students with the methodology and models they need to undertake their own research in 'geosemiotics', the key interface between semiotics and the physical world.Discourses in Place is highly illustrated, containing real examples of language in the material world, including a 'how to use this book' section, group and individual activities, and a glossary of key terms.

The theoretical contributions of Olga I. Moskalskaya to the study of German complex sentences (CS) represent a foundational yet often overlooked area in Russian Germanistics. Understanding the structure and function of CS is paramount for achieving clarity and precision in professional discourse, yet a comprehensive historical account of Moskalskaya’s pioneering work and its subsequent influence has been lacking. This article provides the first systematic analysis of Moskalskaya’s theory of CS, particularly her novel perception of CS as holistic linguistic units and their textual arrangement. It further aims to trace the development of her ideas in contemporary Russian German studies, filling a gap in the discipline’s history. The research draws upon Moskalskaya’s theoretical publications, seminal works by preceding and subsequent Germanists, and illustrative empirical data. Corpus data from the Digital Dictionary of the German Language (DWDS) were used to validate Moskalskaya’s CS-models and assess their frequency in modern German. Targeted samples from contemporary German novels (Walser, Schlink) illustrate CS functioning in text. Methodologically, the study combines an analysis of Moskalskaya’s CS-modeling with comparative, statistical, and transformational analyses of the illustrative material. The study first systematizes Moskalskaya’s theoretical positions on CS structure and textual function. It then demonstrates that the development of her ideas proceeded along two main trajectories: 1) enhanced understanding of CS wholeness, incorporating syntactic-pragmatic, metacognitive, and illocutionary perspectives; and 2) continued investigation into CS functions in numerous textual and discursive contexts, including their role in information structuring and conveying speaker stance. This research also underscores the lasting impact of Moskalskaya’s works. By demonstrating the theoretical grounding and developmental pathways of CS analysis, the findings offer perspectives for contemporary linguistic research. Understanding CS is crucial for enhancing the efficacy and precision of German-language professional communication, particularly in academic, technical, and diplomatic discourse.

The decline of Hanseatic power led to a decrease in the importance of Low German as a language of trade and culture within the Hanseatic region. Today, however, the targeted variety is primarily encountered as a spoken regional language, which is attributed an important artistic dimension thanks to Low German theater, as well as a component of the contemporary supraregional standard language. Moreover, Low German has been recognized as an intangible UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. It becomes evident that the subject of this study is shaped by the complex interplay between archaisation and revitalization. The focus of the present investigation lies in identifying the reasons that have accelerated and facilitated lexical loss. Its multifaceted nature is examined from an interdisciplinary perspective, so that both sociolinguistic factors and cognitive and language-internal mechanisms can be considered as causes for the decline of certain linguistic phenomena. In addition, the influence of Low German will be demonstrated using a contemporary corpus.

A pragmatic-linguistic discourse analysis examines the linguistic features and the use of language in a specific discourse or communication context. This type of analysis focuses on the interaction between language and society in order to capture meanings, power structures, social norms, and cultural practices. The present study conducts a pragmatic-linguistic discourse analysis of headlines regarding Romania's accession to the Schengen Area after Austria lifted its veto in December 2023, focusing on the linguistic strategies that contribute to emotionalization and produce various framing effects. By applying a pragmatic-linguistic approach, the connotations, perspectives, and possible political implications of the headlines are analysed. This investigation aims to develop a more comprehensive understanding of how the media influence the discourse on European integration and national identity in relation to the Schengen Area accession.

Millaista on vastuullinen kielitiede? Yksi nĂ€istĂ€ on alati suositummaksi tullut yhteisjulkaiseminen. Kaiken tĂ€mĂ€n arvo on mittava.
