Fully illustrated by the author, morse describes all aspects of Japanese domestic architecture, from the tiles used on the roofs, to the mats used on the floors; from the layouts of the rooms, to the housewares used to fill them. Then, he moves outside to delight the reader with the splendour of the flowers, trees and water features of the Japanese garden. Finishing with a chapter describing the differences and similarities between Japanese homes and those of the Ainu, Koreans and Chinese, this is one of the most comprehensive books written on the subject and is a must for lovers of all things Japanese.

The amplitude of accommodation declines linearly with age. A new finding is that the magnitude of the slope of the linear portion of the response/stimulus curve also reduces with age, as does the level of tonic accommodation.

Visual, auditory, and olfactory stimuli were added to the nursing home unit environment to simulate two types of environments: a home environment and an outdoor nature environment. Participants seemed to prefer the enhanced environments by choosing to spend more time in them, and by sitting on benches in those environments. There was a trend toward less trespassing, exit-seeking, and other agitated behaviors being exhibited in the enhanced environment, and residents were observed to manifest more pleasure in it. Staff members and family members definitely expressed a preference for the enhanced environment over the regular one. Although effects on residents were limited, this approach offers a low-cost method for making the nursing home environment a better place for those residents.

These hypotheses were tested in an experiment in which the number of times subjects looked at lights (which never changed) was the dependent measure. In the "needs" condition, a change in the lights meant the other person needed help (which the subject could not provide). In the "inputs" condition, a change in the lights meant the other had made a substantial contribution to a joint task. In support of the hypotheses, it was found that the number of looks at the lights in the "needs" condition was significantly greater when the other was a friend than a stranger, while the number of looks in the "inputs" condition was significantly greater when the other was a stranger than a friend.

To assess … In Japan, reclaimed wastewater has been recycled widely for non-potable urban applications and it is to be used for sprinkling roads to mitigate heat island in urban areas. To assess the heat island mitigation effects of the sprinkling reclaimed wastewater on water retentive pavement, we carried out a survey at Shiodome-District, Tokyo. The temperatures of air and roads, humidity, and WBGT (Wet-bulb globe temperature) were measured and heat flux was estimated to compare the condition of the areas with/without sprinkling. The following results were obtained. 1) Sprinkling reclaimed wastewater decreased the road surface temperature by 8 degrees during the daytime and by 3 degrees at night: temperatures equal to those on planting zones. Nevertheless sprinkling was done only in the daytime, the temperature decrease effect was not only obtained during the daytime: it continued through the night, due to the water retentive pavement. 2) Sprinkling reclaimed wastewater reduced the amount of sensible heat flux and increased that of latent heat flux. These results suggest that sprinkling reclaimed wastewater on water retentive pavement can effectively mitigate the heat island phenomenon.

In the present study, we investigated the effect of a day trip to a forest park on human NK activity in male subjects. Twelve healthy male subjects, aged 35-53 years, were selected after giving informed consent. The subjects experienced a day trip to a forest park in the suburbs of Tokyo. They walked for two hours in the morning and afternoon, respectively, in the forest park on Sunday. Blood and urine were sampled in the morning of the following day and 7 days after the trip, and the NK activity, numbers of NK and T cells, and granulysin, perforin, and granzyme A/B-expressing lymphocytes, the concentration of cortisol in blood samples, and the concentration of adrenaline in urine were measured. Similar measurements were made before the trip on a weekend day as the control. Phytoncide concentrations in the forest were measured. The day trip to the forest park significantly increased NK activity and the numbers of CD16(+) and CD56(+) NK cells, perforin, granulysin, and granzyme A/B-expressing NK cells and significantly decreased CD4(+) T cells, the concentrations of cortisol in the blood and adrenaline in urine. The increased NK activity lasted for 7 days after the trip. Phytoncides, such as isoprene, alpha-pinene, and beta-pinene, were detected in the forest air. These findings indicate that the day trip to the forest park also increased the NK activity, number of NK cells, and levels of intracellular anti-cancer proteins, and that this effect lasted for at least 7 days after the trip. Phytoncides released from trees and decreased stress hormone levels may partially contribute to the increased NK activity.

The quantitative analysis reveals the correlation between the use of cell production and the ratio of female to male workers and production strategy variables, as well as the positive effect of cell production on operating profit rates and ordinary profit rates. The case studies reveal the following points: First, processes and organizations have been decentralized to the degree that individual workshops move toward taking primary responsibility for customer relations, production decisions, and delivery. Corporate headquarters increasingly play a coordinating rather than decision–making role. Second, firms have steadily implemented make–to–order systems by tightening links to suppliers and customers and developing new inventory and cost–control systems. Third, firms have started to implement more performance–based personnel practices. However, considerable variance among firms is observed in complementary changes, particularly personnel innovations.

The purpose of this study was to determine the acuity level, reasons, and outcomes of LWBS cases. Methods: LWBS patients (or their guardians) from two linked Canadian EDs (one adult, one pediatric), identified during 11 sampling periods of seven days' duration each, were contacted by telephone. Descriptive statistics are provided. Results: A total of 711 (4.5%) of 15,660 registered emergency patients left without being seen (50% male; median age, 33 years). Triage-matched controls waited a median of 87 minutes before seeing a physician. Of the 711 LWBS cases, 512 (72%) were contacted and 498 agreed to participate. The most common major reason for leaving was "fed up with waiting" (44.8%). Overall, 60% of LWBS cases sought medical attention within one week; 14 patients were hospitalized, and one required urgent surgery. Triage level was not associated with the probability of subsequently seeking medical attention (61%, 61%, and 60% in triage levels 3, 4, and 5, respectively). Of the 198 (39%) who did not subsequently seek medical attention, 50 patients (26%) had been triaged as urgent and one patient died six days after ED registration. Conclusions: The most common reason for LWBS is impatience during peak ED periods. Many of these patients seek medical care within one week. Complications occurred rarely; however, "high-risk" patients who leave without being seen do experience adverse health outcomes. Further research is required to examine ways to reduce LWBS cases.

It shows how nature and aesthetics can be integrated into the living space. The architecture of the Japanese house is characterized by sliding doors and partitions that can be removed to create large, open, and flexible spaces. Traditional furniture has a simple beauty and functionality that fits perfectly with Japanese life and philosophy. Japanese wood products are uniquely crafted without nails or screws, relying on precise joinery for durability. Such a technique yields very durable and aesthetically pleasing furniture pieces. Japanese wood techniques, employing the art of Japanese woodworking, offer training in the wood workshop, teaching patience and respect for nature. This study reviews and highlights Japanese design concepts along with a selection of traditional jointing techniques for furniture. Based on them, a modern table inspired by the Torii Gate was designed. Therefore, modern furniture inspired by such concepts can stand the test of time.

Pneumatic massage is a kind of massage technology that realises the massage function by inflating and deflating the airbag. Compared with mechanical massage, it has the advantages of simple structure, soft force, safety and reliability, and it is especially suitable for the application of old age recreation products. In order to accurately match the needs of the elderly for pneumatic massage products and develop suitable pneumatic massage cushion products, this paper constructs a research framework of user needs-user behaviour-design elements based on the joint AHP-AEIOU-QFD model, which clarifies the user needs and core design elements of the ageing pneumatic massage cushion and provides an important basis for product development. Firstly, the AHP method was used to construct the user requirements model, which clarified that safety and core functions are the core primary needs of the elderly, and structural rationality and pneumatic massage function are the core secondary needs of the elderly. Further, the QFD method converts the user requirements into technical parameters and analyses them and clarifies the modular airbag and support structure design as the core design elements of the age-friendly pneumatic massage cushion products. Finally, the JACK simulation platform is used to conduct comparative experiments on the design parts of the products, and the simulation data verifies the feasibility of the optimised products. The results of this paper have an important role in guiding the design and development of ageing massage cushion products.

Until now, Yeojaga has primarily been discussed in the context of variant studies of Bokseonhwaeumga, with little scholarly attention given to the contents of the letters included in the manuscript or to the relationship between the letters and the didactic verse. In response, this paper investigates the bibliographical features and composition of Yeojaga and analyzes two kyubang gasa pieces—Yeojaga and Balmongga—alongside thirteen vernacular letters in order to explore the significance of their co-presence in a single volume. Yeojaga appears to have been compiled by multiple hands, rather than as a unified manuscript. Despite differences in form, both the verse and the letters share a common function as practical modes of women’s writing. The kyubang gasa operate as didactic songs rooted in Confucian ideals, while the letters functioned as tools for daily communication and as templates for writing practice. The sequence of the letters, variations in handwriting, the presence or absence of folio numbers, and the inclusion of incomplete letters all suggest deliberate editorial choices made by the compiler(s). Although this article remains a preliminary exploration, it provides a meaningful starting point for new perspectives on texts that combine kyubang gasa and eongandok in a single manuscript.

Methods : A single-subject case study design was employed involving a patient diagnosed with severe TBI. Sixteen sessions of ICF-oriented home occupational therapy were administered biweekly over an eight-month period. Pre- and post-intervention assessments were conducted using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to examine changes in ADL performance, fall incidence, and levels of social engagement. Results : Post-intervention analysis revealed a 41.67% improvement in ADL performance. The monthly average fall rate significantly decreased from 3.0 to 0.5. Additionally, the participant demonstrated meaningful reintegration into community life, participating in local gatherings and outdoor activities with the assistance of a personal care aide. Conclusion : Findings from this case study underscore the potential clinical utility of ICF-based home occupational therapy in promoting functional recovery, mitigating fall risks, and fostering social reintegration in individuals with severe TBI. Although the single-case methodology limits generalizability, the outcomes suggest promising directions for future large-scale, longitudinal investigations.

Integrating behavior setting theory and GIS spatial analysis, we systematically analyzed the spatio-temporal distribution of resident activities, activity type preferences, and their interactions with the spatial environment. A conceptual model of dynamic "people-space" interaction was developed based on multi-source data collection and analysis. The empirical findings informed the proposal of targeted micro-renewal strategies for public spaces surrounding lakes, focusing on five key aspects: enhancing safety and resilience, ensuring seamless connectivity, promoting ecological integration, creating narrative environments, and shaping spatial affordances. This research provides a scientific basis for improving the quality of public spaces surrounding urban lakes and resident well-being, offering valuable insights for planning and design in similar contexts.
