One of the … The globalization of the political economy at the end of the twentieth century is destabilizing the patterns of university professional work developed over the past hundred years. One of the major changes that has taken place as a result of globalization is that faculty, who were previously situated between capital and labor, are now positioned squarely in the marketplace. To grasp the extent of changes taking place and to understand the forces of change, Academic Capitalism examines the current state of academic careers and institutions, with a particular focus on public research universities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. In this wide-ranging analysis, Slaughter and Leslie leave no aspect of academic work unexplored: undergraduate and graduate education, teaching and research, student aid policies, and federal research policies. All are part of the equation. The authors pay particular attention to how faculty spend their time, what forces drive their choices of activities, and what this means for higher education.

Taking … Is everything in a university for sale if the price is right? In this book, one of America's leading educators cautions that the answer is all too often yes. Taking the first comprehensive look at the growing commercialization of our academic institutions, Derek Bok probes the efforts on campus to profit financially not only from athletics but increasingly, from education and research as well. He shows how such ventures are undermining core academic values and what universities can do to limit the damage. Commercialization has many causes, but it could never have grown to its present state had it not been for the recent, rapid growth of money-making opportunities in a more technologically complex, knowledge-based economy. A brave new world has now emerged in which university presidents, enterprising professors, and even administrative staff can all find seductive opportunities to turn specialized knowledge into profit. Bok argues that universities, faced with these temptations, are jeopardizing their fundamental mission in their eagerness to make money by agreeing to more and more compromises with basic academic values. He discusses the dangers posed by increased secrecy in corporate-funded research, for-profit Internet companies funded by venture capitalists, industry-subsidized educational programs for physicians, conflicts of interest in research on human subjects, and other questionable activities. While entrepreneurial universities may occasionally succeed in the short term, reasons Bok, only those institutions that vigorously uphold academic values, even at the cost of a few lucrative ventures, will win public trust and retain the respect of faculty and students. Candid, evenhanded, and eminently readable, Universities in the Marketplace will be widely debated by all those concerned with the future of higher education in America and beyond.

The objectives of the review were to: systematically collect, document, scrutinise and critically analyse the current research literature on supply‐side higher education marketing; establish the scope of higher education marketing; identify gaps in the research literature; and make recommendations for further research in this field. Design/methodology/approach The approach for this study entailed extensive searches of relevant business management and education databases. The intention was to ensure that, as far as possible, all literature in the field was identified – while keeping the focus on literature of greatest pertinence to the research questions . Findings The paper finds that potential benefits of applying marketing theories and concepts that have been effective in the business world are gradually being recognised by researchers in the field of HE marketing. However, the literature on HE marketing is incoherent, even inchoate, and lacks theoretical models that reflect upon the particular context of HE and the nature of their services. Research limitations/implications The research field of HE marketing is still at a relatively pioneer stage with much research still to be carried out both from a problem identification and strategic perspective. Originality/value Despite the substantial literature on the marketisation of HE and consumer behaviour, scholarship to provide evidence of the marketing strategies that have been implemented by HE institutions on the supply‐side remains limited, and this is relatively uncharted territory. This paper reviews the literature in the field, focusing on marketing strategies in the rapidly developing HE international market.

Giroux … In this article, Henry Giroux addresses the corrosive effects of corporate culture on the academy and recent attempts by faculty and students to resist the corporatization of higher education. Giroux argues that neoliberalism is the most dangerous ideology of the current historical moment. He shows that civic discourse has given way to the language of commercialization, privatization, and deregulation and that, within the language and images of corporate culture, citizenship is portrayed as an utterly privatized affair that produces self-interested individuals. He maintains that corporate culture functions largely to either ignore or cancel out social injustices in the existing social order by overriding the democratic impulses and practices of civil society through an emphasis on the unbridled workings of market relations. Giroux suggests that these trends mark a hazardous turn in U.S. society, one that threatens our understanding of democracy and affects the ways we address the meaning and purpose of higher education.

The paper aims to draw attention to some of the resulting inadequacies in analysis and to explore their consequences. After offering an overview of the various disciplinary cultures, it examines different facets of academic activity at the macro, meso and micro levels and suggests that in each case the differences between disciplines are important enough to merit general recognition. The author concludes with a brief speculation on why the issue is so widely neglected.

In this article, stakeholder analysis is put forward as a tool to assist universities in classifying stakeholders and determining stakeholder salience. Increasingly universities are expected to assume a third mission and to engage in interactions with industrial and regional partners. While incentive schemes and government programmes try to encourage universities to reach out more to external communities, some important barriers to such linkages still remain. To fulfil their obligation towards being a socially accountable institution and to prevent mission overload, universities will have to carefully select their stakeholders and identify the ‘right’ degree of differentiation. For the university, thinking in terms of partnerships with key stakeholders has important implications for its governance and accountability arrangements. For the future of the universities we foresee a change towards networked governance and arrangements to ensure accountability along the lines of corporate social responsibility. In order to further explore some of these concepts and to empirically investigate the tendencies suggested here, this article proposes an ambitious research agenda for tackling the emerging issues of governance, stakeholder management and higher education’s interaction with society.

The international dimension of higher education is becoming increasingly important, complex, and confusing. It is therefore timely to reexamine and update the conceptual frameworks underpinning the notion of inter-nationalization in light of today’s changes and challenges. The purpose of this article is to study internationalization at both the institutional and national/sector level. Both levels are important. The national/sector level has an important influence on the international dimension through policy, funding, programs, and regulatory frameworks. Yet it is usually at the institutional level that the real process of internationalization is taking place. This article analyses the meaning, definition, rationales, and approaches of internationalization using a bottom-up (institutional) approach and a top-down (national/sector) approach and examines the dynamic relationship between these two levels. Key policy issues and questions for the future direction of internationalization are identified.

There is growing recognition, in both industrial and developing countries, of the need to establish one or more world-class universities that can compete effectively with the best of the best around the world. Contextualising the drive for world-class higher education institutions and the power of international and domestic university rankings, this book outlines possible strategies and pathways for establishing globally competitive universities and explores the challenges, costs, and risks involved. Its findings will be of particular interest to policy makers, university leaders, researchers, and development practitioners.

Globalization is the context of economic and academic trends that are part of the reality of the 21st century. Internationalization includes the policies and practices undertaken by academic systems and institutions—and even individuals—to cope with the global academic environment. The motivations for internationalization include commercial advantage, knowledge and language acquisition, enhancing the curriculum with international content, and many others. Specific initiatives such as branch campuses, cross-border collaborative arrangements, programs for international students, establishing English-medium programs and degrees, and others have been put into place as part of internationalization. Efforts to monitor international initiatives and ensure quality are integral to the international higher education environment.

Drawing on critical theory … This study critically examines how English-language newspaper discourse in Qatar and the UAE constructs and legitimizes neoliberal ideologies surrounding higher education institutions and international branch campuses. Drawing on critical theory and critical discourse analysis, we delve into the discourses used in newspaper articles published between 2010 and 2024. We explore the underlying meanings, ideologies, and power relations embedded in the discourses that present institutions of higher education as providers of world-class education and models of best practices. Our findings reveal common themes shared across the two countries, emphasizing commitment to excellence, global leadership, world-class education, and best practices. At the same time, distinctions unique to each are identified, suggesting different approaches to holistic development, diversity, inclusivity, and the importance attributed to international recognition and rankings. This study enriches our understanding of the way neoliberal ideologies permeate discourses, influencing and being influenced by the academic landscape, thus charting new paths for future directions in this area.

Through case studies and stakeholder interviews, it pinpoints four key factors: organizational adaptation, faculty role redefinition, digital transformation, and sustainability. Remarkably, sustainability emerges as a critical aspect, integrating environmental, social, and economic considerations into strategies. These include lowering environmental impact, fostering social equity, and safeguarding economic resilience. The study highlights the importance of understanding HEIs' responses to crises and their effect on organizational development. The understanding of the study can inform policymakers and administrators, enhancing crisis management and organizational strategies for greater resilience. By assimilating sustainability into these strategies, HEIs can align with global agendas like the UN Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to a sustainable future for higher education.

GAI is envisioned to positively influence students’ learning by providing tailored and diverse feedback on texts. However, research also suggests that students use GAI unethically or uncritically, possibly leading to issues with deep learning, cognitive growth, and problem-solving skills. This paper further discusses digital study practices by employing two theoretical views on education, Bildung and sociomaterialism. Thinking with theory is a postqualitative approach that situates the researcher, materials, and theories within a study as active participants. The study investigated human and nonhuman (GAI, course literature) involvements in two PowerPoint presentations in a Finnish higher education bachelor course. It points to speculative and hesitant human and nonhuman interplays troubling the Bildung (i.e., epistemic and ethical) processes.

It is the need of the hour and not a luxury for a culturally diverse country like America and its future success will depend on the globally competent people. In this regard, effective measures have been proposed for the state and local government officials to prepare the globally competent students, and make competitive workplaces so that they successfully compete in the international market. However, apart from citizens, there should be some work done to propose the strategies for local administrators on how they become internationally aware, become empathetic, and effectively interact with people from different cultures, languages and backgrounds.

However, robust quality assurance systems are vital to ensure their impact. The Turkish Higher Education Quality Council (THEQC) focuses on aligning Turkish higher education with international standards and fostering a quality culture by promoting the collection and analysis of student feedback. Gathering feedback from students through methods like surveys can identify areas for improvement and enhance the overall quality of education. This study aimed to develop a comprehensive questionnaire model aligned with THEQC criteria to assess student satisfaction at the Faculty of Fisheries, İzmir Kâtip Çelebi University. Therefore, a survey matching 18 sub-criteria under the Learning and Teaching heading of THEQC was created in order to determine the satisfaction levels of the students of the faculty. A five-point Likert scale (1-Strongly disagree, 2-Disagree, 3-Undecided, 4-Agree, 5-Strongly agree) was used for the responses to the propositions. The survey was applied face-to-face to 55 students (63.64% were male and 36.36% were female) enrolled in the Fisheries Engineering Program. Based on the research findings, students expressed the highest satisfaction with the accessibility of faculty and academic consultants outside of class hours and their overall satisfaction with the Fisheries Engineering program. On the other hand, the inadequacy of the courses in terms of practical application and the insufficient and unbalanced extracurricular activities (homework, presentations, etc.) have been recorded as topics with low satisfaction levels. The average satisfaction levels by THEQC’s learning and training criteria were recorded as 3.58 points for Program Design, Evaluate and Update, 3.67 points for Implementation of Programs, 3.68 points for Learning Resources and Academic Support Services, and 3.95 for Teaching Staff.

For this purpose, the study employed the well-known non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method, specifically the window DEA (WDEA), to analyse a sample of 8 university libraries in Croatia. The study considered three inputs (Number of books held, Number of library staff, and Actual allocated budget) and three outputs (Circulation, Number of books added, and Number of registered members). The findings indicate that none of the university libraries in Croatia demonstrated relative efficiency during the observed period. These results provide valuable insights for university management and policy makers. This study is characterised by its original approach, as it is the first known attempt to use the DEA method to assess the performance of academic libraries in Croatia and the South East European region.

This article focuses on analyzing key theoretical perspectives on economic autonomy in higher education, emphasizing the essential relationship between autonomy, accountability, and financial transparency. Employing an integrated methodological approach, including policy analysis, legal document review, and case studies of selected public universities, the article identifies existing limitations and shortcomings in the current legal framework governing financial autonomy. Based on this analysis, it proposes strategic directions to expand financial self-governance in higher education institutions. Specifically, it advocates for the delegation of authority to manage and utilize institutional assets, coupled with the establishment of appropriate supervisory mechanisms to ensure the effective and responsible use of public resources. Accordingly, the article presents critical recommendations for developing and improving the legal framework on university autonomy, including amendments to the Law on Higher Education, the establishment of mechanisms to mobilize and allocate financial resources, and enhancements to financial oversight systems in the context of institutional autonomy. These proposals aim to promote a more substantive, effective, and equitable implementation of university autonomy in Vietnam.

This study investigates how the presence of an international faculty influences the international academic impact of 128 “Double First-class” Chinese universities from 2011 to 2020. Using benchmark regression models alongside endogeneity and robustness tests, the analysis incorporates moderating effects and heterogeneity to examine underlying mechanisms. The results indicate that the introduction of foreign faculty significantly enhances the international academic impact of these institutions. Furthermore, the scientific and technological human capital of a foreign faculty plays a key role in this effect. This study also finds that the universities’ level of digitalization significantly moderates the relationship between international faculty presence and academic impact. Additionally, the impact varies across regions and development levels, highlighting heterogeneity in outcomes. These findings suggest that Chinese universities should strategically strengthen the recruitment of international faculties, carefully assess their expertise, and leverage digital capabilities to maximize academic benefits. This research provides empirical evidence on the value of international faculties in advancing the global academic standing of Chinese higher education institutions.

This review article is a starting point to think about the contemporary far-right attacks on universities from a geographical perspective. By combining insights from geographical research on universities and far-right politics, the article develops a research agenda and suggests potential themes of inquiry. It examines the multiple intersections between far-right politics, geography and universities, the continuities and discontinuities between historical and contemporary iterations of far-right politics, as well as the contextual differences in the manifestation of far-right politics within universities. Drawing from contemporary examples, the article suggests four areas of future research – knowledge production and education, everyday spaces, economic geographies and spaces of resistance, to approach the multifaceted relationships between universities and far-right politics. Finally, the article also posits questions on responsibility in this context, outlining the need to imagine and realise anti-fascist universities.

Turkey’s strategic use of education as a form of soft power, alongside its institutional efforts to internationalize higher education, underpins its ambition to foster diplomatic ties and enhance geopolitical influence. By examining cross-border educational partnerships and the mobility of international students from strategically significant regions, this research highlights both opportunities and challenges in Turkey’s educational branding. Despite notable progress, contradictions related to political interference, academic freedom, and quality assurance complicate Turkey’s global reputation as an education hub. The study employs a library research methodology, analyzing secondary sources to provide an integrative perspective on how education management intersects with foreign policy objectives. Findings suggest that Turkey’s educational diplomacy serves as a vital tool for geopolitical leverage but requires addressing internal governance issues to sustain credibility and effectiveness in the global education landscape.

The concept is rich in content, emphasizing that common prosperity is a dual process of material and spiritual advancement for all people, a gradual prosperity from the local to the national level. It is an essential requirement of socialism with Chinese characteristics, an important feature of Chinese-style modernization, and a guarantee for social harmony and stability. Achieving common prosperity requires the creation of a "dual prosperity" system, optimization of the distribution structure, and promotion of regional coordination. As a demonstration zone, Zhejiang has leveraged its economic, policy, cultural, and governance advantages. Through the development of new productive forces, optimization of industrial structures, reduction of the "three major gaps," and improvement of public services, Zhejiang has enriched the theory of common prosperity and demonstrated the advantages of the system, offering valuable experiences for the whole country.

However, the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and their wide adoption by researchers may challenge this mandate by altering research processes. This article discusses the changing research cultures arising from the use of AI tools in academic research and how these may occasion retrogressive research cultures. It uses exploratory methodology, engaging with literature and pertinent theories. The article’s main finding is that AI is widely used in various research stages. It also establishes the different viewpoints on AI usage, collating the wider African vision of scientific knowledge production. It concludes that AI affects cognitive-based learning and critical thinking, which may disrupt the succession of research cultures and divest the academe of its intellectual integrity. The article suggests an urgent review of AI use in universities to restore and maintain the integrity of knowledge production for the well-being of current and future societies.

Utilizing data from 2008 to 2018, this study employs a multi-period difference-in-difference (DID) approach to examine the BRI's impact on international student mobility to China. Our findings highlight a considerable positive effect of the BRI on the scale of international student inflow to China. The BRI's influence on international student mobility to China (ISMC) is facilitated through bilateral trade, mutual recognition of degrees and diplomas, and scholarship provided by the host country. These findings imply that for emerging high education systems such as China, it is imperative to strengthen trade ties with pertinent countries and establish a supportive institutional framework to attract international students and enhance their global influence.

In particular, strong government intervention in university management has been observed across East Asia or other areas, partly to improve the status of the top universities as they seek to expand higher education systems while operating with limited public financial resources. The Taiwanese higher education system is no exception and has undergone similar transformations along with international marketization and governmental decentralization. To understand academic management in Taiwan, it is useful to examine (a) the national higher education setting; (b) system-level governance; (c) institution level governance and leadership; (d) the local, regional and global drivers for change in the higher education system. Even though there are many challenges ahead, higher education institutions have been steered in a transformative way. In the future, we expect the higher education sector to be able to enjoy a high level of autonomy so that both private and public institutions can more freely decide on most substantial issues without state interference and with the control of the sector being mainly regulated through market mechanisms and academic self-governance.
