The necessity for alternative production routes for these major commodity chemicals via non-oil-based processes has driven research in … C2 to C4 olefins are traditionally produced from steam cracking of naphtha. The necessity for alternative production routes for these major commodity chemicals via non-oil-based processes has driven research in past times during the oil crises. Currently, there is a renewed interest in producing lower olefins from alternative feedstocks such as coal, natural gas, or biomass, in view of high oil prices, environmental regulations, and strategies to gain independence from oil imports. This review describes the major routes for the production of lower olefins from synthesis gas with an emphasis on a direct or single step process, the so-called FTO or Fischer–Tropsch to olefins process. The different catalysts for FTO are outlined and compared, and the key issues and requirements for future developments are highlighted. Iron-based catalysts are prevailing for FTO, and reproducible lower olefin selectivities of 50 wt % of hydrocarbons produced have been realized at CO conversions higher than 70% for 60 to 1000 h on stream. Remarkably the high selectivity to lower olefins has been achieved over a broad range of process conditions (P, T, H2/CO ratio, GHSV). A major challenge for further development and application of FTO catalysts is the suppression of carbon lay-down to enhance catalyst lifetime and to preserve their physical integrity under demanding reaction conditions.

Rapid vaporization and mixing with air with an automotive fuel injector were performed at temperatures sufficiently low and times sufficiently fast that homogeneous reactions producing carbon, acetaldehyde, ethylene, and total combustion products can be minimized. This process has great potential for low-cost H2 generation in fuel cells for small portable applications where liquid fuel storage is essential and where systems must be small, simple, and robust.

Producing hydrogen from ethanol steam reforming would not only be environmentally friendly but also would open new opportunities for utilization of renewable resources, which are globally available. This paper reviews the current state of the steam reforming process of ethanol, examines different catalysts, and, finally, makes a comparative analysis. Different catalysts have been used for the steam reforming of ethanol. Depending on the type of catalysts, reaction conditions, and the catalyst preparation method, ethanol conversion and hydrogen production vary greatly. It was observed that Co/ZnO, ZnO, Rh/Al2O3, Rh/CeO2, and Ni/La2O3−Al2O3 performed the best, in regard to the steam reforming of ethanol. Currently, hydrogen production from ethanol steam reforming is still in the research and development stage.

Iron-based Fischer–Tropsch catalysts, which are applied in the conversion of CO and H2 into longer hydrocarbon chains, are historically amongst the most intensively studied systems in heterogeneous catalysis. Despite this, … Iron-based Fischer–Tropsch catalysts, which are applied in the conversion of CO and H2 into longer hydrocarbon chains, are historically amongst the most intensively studied systems in heterogeneous catalysis. Despite this, fundamental understanding of the complex and dynamic chemistry of the iron–carbon–oxygen system and its implications for the rapid deactivation of the iron-based catalysts is still a developing field. Fischer–Tropsch catalysis is characterized by its multidisciplinary nature and therefore deals with a wide variety of fundamental chemical and physical problems. This critical review will summarize the current state of knowledge of the underlying mechanisms for the activation and eventual deactivation of iron-based Fischer–Tropsch catalysts and suggest systematic approaches for relating chemical identity to performance in next generation iron-based catalyst systems (210 references).

The focus is on reaction mechanisms and kinetics of the water–gas shift and Fischer–Tropsch (FT) … A critical review of the kinetics and selectivity of the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is given. The focus is on reaction mechanisms and kinetics of the water–gas shift and Fischer–Tropsch (FT) reactions. New developments in the product selectivity as well as the overall kinetics are reviewed. It is concluded that the development of rate equations for the FTS should be based on realistic mechanistic schemes. Qualitatively, there is agreement that the product distribution is affected by the occurrence of secondary reactions (hydrogenation, isomerization, reinsertion, and hydrogenolysis). At high CO and H2O pressures, the most important secondary reaction is readsorption of olefins, resulting in initiation of chain growth processes. Secondary hydrogenation of α-olefins may occur and depends on the catalytic system and the process conditions. The rates of the secondary reactions increase exponentially with chain length. Much controversy exists about whether these chain-length dependencies stem from differences in physisorption, solubility, or diffusivity. Preferential physisorption of longer hydrocarbons and increase of the solubility with chain length influences the product distribution and results in a decreasing olefin-to-paraffin ratio with increasing chain length. Process development and reactor design should be based on reliable kinetic expressions and detailed selectivity models.

In this paper, a … Synthetic natural gas (SNG) can be obtained via methanation of synthesis gas (syngas). Many thermodynamic reaction details involved in this process are not yet fully understood. In this paper, a comprehensive thermodynamic analysis of reactions occurring in the methanation of carbon oxides (CO and CO2) is conducted using the Gibbs free energy minimization method. The equilibrium constants of eight reactions involved in the methanation reactions were calculated at different temperatures. The effects of temperature, pressure, ratio of H2/CO (and H2/CO2), and the addition of other compounds (H2O, O2, CH4, and C2H4) in the feed gas (syngas) on the conversion of CO and CO2, CH4 selectivity and yield, as well as carbon deposition, were carefully investigated. In addition, experimental data obtained on commercial Ni-based catalysts for CO methanation and three cases adopted from the literature were compared with the thermodynamic calculations. It is found that low temperature, high pressure, and a large H2/CO (and H2/CO2) ratio are favourable for the methanation reactions. Adding steam into the feed gas could alleviate the carbon deposition to a large extent. Trace amounts of O2 in syngas is unfavourable for SNG generation although it can lower carbon deposition. Additional CH4 in the feed gas almost has no influence on the CO conversion and CH4 yield, but it leads to the increase of carbon formed. Introduction of a small amount of C2H4, a representative of hydrocarbons in syngas, results in low CH4 yield and serious carbon deposition although it does not affect CO conversion. CO is relatively easy to hydrogenated compared to CO2 at the same reaction conditions. The comparison of thermodynamic calculations with experimental results demonstrated that the Gibbs free energy minimization method is significantly effective for understanding the reactions occurring in methanation and helpful for the development of catalysts and processes for the production of SNG.

Since loss of catalytic activity and physical destruction of the catalyst by carbon deposits can occur rapidly (within hours or days) under unfavorable conditions, understanding and control of these effects are of major technological and economical importance.

The key features and considerations for each of these deactivation types is reviewed in detail with reference to the latest literature reports in these areas. Two case studies on the deactivation mechanisms of catalysts used for cobalt Fischer-Tropsch and selective catalytic reduction are considered to provide additional depth in the topics of sintering, coking, poisoning, and fouling. Regeneration considerations and options are also briefly discussed for each deactivation mechanism.

Only given sufficient geological time can new fossil fuels be formed naturally. In contrast, chemical recycling of carbon dioxide from natural and industrial sources as well as varied human activities or even from the air itself to methanol or dimethyl ether (DME) and their varied products can be achieved via its capture and subsequent reductive hydrogenative conversion. The present Perspective reviews this new approach and our research in the field over the last 15 years. Carbon recycling represents a significant aspect of our proposed Methanol Economy. Any available energy source (alternative energies such as solar, wind, geothermal, and atomic energy) can be used for the production of needed hydrogen and chemical conversion of CO(2). Improved new methods for the efficient reductive conversion of CO(2) to methanol and/or DME that we have developed include bireforming with methane and ways of catalytic or electrochemical conversions. Liquid methanol is preferable to highly volatile and potentially explosive hydrogen for energy storage and transportation. Together with the derived DME, they are excellent transportation fuels for internal combustion engines (ICE) and fuel cells as well as convenient starting materials for synthetic hydrocarbons and their varied products. Carbon dioxide thus can be chemically transformed from a detrimental greenhouse gas causing global warming into a valuable, renewable and inexhaustible carbon source of the future allowing environmentally neutral use of carbon fuels and derived hydrocarbon products.

Cobalt Particle Size Effects in the Fischer−Tropsch Reaction Studied with Carbon Nanofiber Supported Catalysts

The influence of cobalt particle size in the range of 2.6−27 nm on the performance in Fischer−Tropsch synthesis has been investigated for the first time using well-defined catalysts based on … The influence of cobalt particle size in the range of 2.6−27 nm on the performance in Fischer−Tropsch synthesis has been investigated for the first time using well-defined catalysts based on an inert carbon nanofibers support material. X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that cobalt was metallic, even for small particle sizes, after the in situ reduction treatment, which is a prerequisite for catalytic operation and is difficult to achieve using traditional oxidic supports. The turnover frequency (TOF) for CO hydrogenation was independent of cobalt particle size for catalysts with sizes larger than 6 nm (1 bar) or 8 nm (35 bar), while both the selectivity and the activity changed for catalysts with smaller particles. At 35 bar, the TOF decreased from 23 × 10-3 to 1.4 × 10-3 s-1, while the C5+ selectivity decreased from 85 to 51 wt % when the cobalt particle size was reduced from 16 to 2.6 nm. This demonstrates that the minimal required cobalt particle size for Fischer−Tropsch catalysis is larger (6−8 nm) than can be explained by classical structure sensitivity. Other explanations raised in the literature, such as formation of CoO or Co carbide species on small particles during catalytic testing, were not substantiated by experimental evidence from X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Interestingly, we found with EXAFS a decrease of the cobalt coordination number under reaction conditions, which points to reconstruction of the cobalt particles. It is argued that the cobalt particle size effects can be attributed to nonclassical structure sensitivity in combination with CO-induced surface reconstruction. The profound influences of particle size may be important for the design of new Fischer−Tropsch catalysts.

Traditionally, olefins with two to four carbons are produced by steam cracking of crude oil-derived naphtha, but there is a pressing need for alternative feedstocks and processes in view of supply limitations and of environmental issues. Although the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis has long offered a means to convert coal, biomass, and natural gas into hydrocarbon derivatives through the intermediacy of synthesis gas (a mixture of molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide), selectivity toward lower olefins tends to be low. This reaction produces syngas that can be used to produce a wide … Dry (CO2) reforming of methane (DRM) is a well-studied reaction that is of both scientific and industrial importance. This reaction produces syngas that can be used to produce a wide range of products, such as higher alkanes and oxygenates by means of Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. DRM is inevitably accompanied by deactivation due to carbon deposition. DRM is also a highly endothermic reaction and requires operating temperatures of 800–1000 °C to attain high equilibrium conversion of CH4 and CO2 to H2 and CO and to minimize the thermodynamic driving force for carbon deposition. The most widely used catalysts for DRM are based on Ni. However, many of these catalysts undergo severe deactivation due to carbon deposition. Noble metals have also been studied and are typically found to be much more resistant to carbon deposition than Ni catalysts, but are generally uneconomical. Noble metals can also be used to promote the Ni catalysts in order to increase their resistance to deactivation. In order to design catalysts that minimize deactivation, it is necessary to understand the elementary steps involved in the activation and conversion of CH4 and CO2. This review will cover DRM literature for catalysts based on Rh, Ru, Pt, and Pd metals. This includes the effect of these noble metals on the kinetics, mechanism and deactivation of these catalysts.

However, … Abstract Methanol synthesis by CO 2 hydrogenation is attractive in view of avoiding the environmental implications associated with the production of the traditional syngas feedstock and mitigating global warming. However, there still is a lack of efficient catalysts for such alternative processes. Herein, we unveil the high activity, 100 % selectivity, and remarkable stability for 1000 h on stream of In 2 O 3 supported on ZrO 2 under industrially relevant conditions. This strongly contrasts to the benchmark Cu‐ZnO‐Al 2 O 3 catalyst, which is unselective and experiences rapid deactivation. In‐depth characterization of the In 2 O 3 ‐based materials points towards a mechanism rooted in the creation and annihilation of oxygen vacancies as active sites, whose amount can be modulated in situ by co‐feeding CO and boosted through electronic interactions with the zirconia carrier. These results constitute a promising basis for the design of a prospective technology for sustainable methanol production.

Although considerable progress has been made in direct synthesis gas (syngas) conversion to light olefins (C2(=)-C4(=)) via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), the wide product distribution remains a challenge, with a theoretical … Although considerable progress has been made in direct synthesis gas (syngas) conversion to light olefins (C2(=)-C4(=)) via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), the wide product distribution remains a challenge, with a theoretical limit of only 58% for C2-C4 hydrocarbons. We present a process that reaches C2(=)-C4(=) selectivity as high as 80% and C2-C4 94% at carbon monoxide (CO) conversion of 17%. This is enabled by a bifunctional catalyst affording two types of active sites with complementary properties. The partially reduced oxide surface (ZnCrO(x)) activates CO and H2, and C-C coupling is subsequently manipulated within the confined acidic pores of zeolites. No obvious deactivation is observed within 110 hours. Furthermore, this composite catalyst and the process may allow use of coal- and biomass-derived syngas with a low H2/CO ratio.

We report a direct comparison between the activity of ZnCu and ZnO/Cu model catalysts for methanol synthesis. By combining x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, density functional theory, and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, we can identify and characterize the reactivity of each catalyst. Both experimental and theoretical results agree that ZnCu undergoes surface oxidation under the reaction conditions so that surface Zn transforms into ZnO and allows ZnCu to reach the activity of ZnO/Cu with the same Zn coverage. Our results highlight a synergy of Cu and ZnO at the interface that facilitates methanol synthesis via formate intermediates.

Here … Abstract The direct production of liquid fuels from CO 2 hydrogenation has attracted enormous interest for its significant roles in mitigating CO 2 emissions and reducing dependence on petrochemicals. Here we report a highly efficient, stable and multifunctional Na–Fe 3 O 4 /HZSM-5 catalyst, which can directly convert CO 2 to gasoline-range (C 5 –C 11 ) hydrocarbons with selectivity up to 78% of all hydrocarbons while only 4% methane at a CO 2 conversion of 22% under industrial relevant conditions. It is achieved by a multifunctional catalyst providing three types of active sites (Fe 3 O 4 , Fe 5 C 2 and acid sites), which cooperatively catalyse a tandem reaction. More significantly, the appropriate proximity of three types of active sites plays a crucial role in the successive and synergetic catalytic conversion of CO 2 to gasoline. The multifunctional catalyst, exhibiting a remarkable stability for 1,000 h on stream, definitely has the potential to be a promising industrial catalyst for CO 2 utilization to liquid fuels.

For the supported catalysts commonly used in such reactions, the tailoring of the interfacial effect between metal centers and supporting materials so as to obtain superior low-temperature CO2 methanation performance is a significant but challenging subject. In this work, we altered the size regimes of the Ru deposits in Ru/CeO2 assemblies and uncovered the competitive relationship between the strong metal–support interactions (SMSI) and the H-spillover effect in determining the methanation activities by some ex situ and in situ spectroscopic techniques coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For CeO2 nanowire supported single Ru atoms, Ru nanoclusters (ca. 1.2 nm in size), and large Ru nanoparticles (ca. 4.0 nm in size), the nanoclusters show the most outstanding low-temperature CO2 methanation activity and 98–100% selectivity, with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 7.41 × 10–3 s–1 at 190 °C. The negative CO2 reaction order decreases their absolute values from single atoms to nanoclusters and turns positive in nanoparticles, while the positive H2 reaction order follows the reverse tendency. In situ DRIFTS measurements demonstrate that the dominant reaction pathway is the CO route, in which metal carbonyls are the critical intermediates and the active sites are those Ce3+–OH sites and Ru sites near the metal–support interfaces in charge of CO2 dissociation and carbonyl hydrogenation, respectively. Meanwhile, the strongest SMSI and H-spillover effect are respectively encountered in supported single Ru atoms and large Ru nanoparticles, with the activation of metal carbonyls and the dehydration of the support surfaces suppressed correspondingly. The two factors reach a balance in CeO2-supported Ru nanoclusters, and the methanation activity is therefore maximized. A mechanistic understanding of the interfacial effect in tuning the CO2 methanation activities would shed light on the ingenious design of the CO2 hydrogenation catalysts to utilize the SMSI and H-spillover effect to an appropriate degree and avoid their possible suppressions that would take place in extreme cases.

Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis is a classic route of syngas chemistry, but the product selectivity of FT synthesis is limited by the Anderson-Schulz-Flory (ASF) distribution. The hydrogenation of CO2 into C2+ hydrocarbons involving C-C bond formation encounters similar selectivity limitation. The present article focuses on recent advances in breaking the selectivity limitation by using a reaction coupling strategy for hydrogenation of both CO and CO2 into C2+ hydrocarbons, which include key building-block chemicals, such as lower (C2-C4) olefins and aromatics, and liquid fuels, such as gasoline (C5-C11 hydrocarbons), jet fuel (C8-C16 hydrocarbons) and diesel fuel (C10-C20 hydrocarbons). The design and development of novel bifunctional or multifunctional catalysts, which are composed of metal, metal carbide or metal oxide nanoparticles and zeolites, for hydrogenation of CO and CO2 to C2+ hydrocarbons beyond FT synthesis will be reviewed. The key factors in controlling catalytic performances, such as the catalyst component, the acidity and mesoporosity of the zeolite and the proximity between the metal/metal carbide/metal oxide and zeolite, will be analysed to provide insights for designing efficient bifunctional or multifunctional catalysts. The reaction mechanism, in particular the activation of CO and CO2, the reaction pathway and the reaction intermediate, will be discussed to provide a deep understanding of the chemistry of the new C1 chemistry routes beyond FT synthesis.

Accordingly, this perspective presents current state of the art and outlook in synthesis of light olefins, dimethyl ether, liquid fuels, and alcohols through two leading hydrogenation mechanisms: methanol reaction and Fischer-Tropsch based carbon dioxide hydrogenation. The future research directions for developing new heterogeneous catalysts with transformational technologies, including 3D printing and artificial intelligence, are provided.

However, the associated increase in anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions can negatively affect global temperatures and ocean acidity. Moreover, fossil fuels are a limited resource and their depletion will ultimately force one to seek alternative carbon sources to maintain a sustainable economy. Converting CO2 into value-added chemicals and fuels, using renewable energy, is one of the promising approaches in this regard. Major advances in energy-efficient CO2 conversion can potentially alleviate CO2 emissions, reduce the dependence on nonrenewable resources, and minimize the environmental impacts from the portions of fossil fuels displaced. Methanol (CH3OH) is an important chemical feedstock and can be used as a fuel for internal combustion engines and fuel cells, as well as a platform molecule for the production of chemicals and fuels. As one of the promising approaches, thermocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH via heterogeneous catalysis has attracted great attention in the past decades. Major progress has been made in the development of various catalysts including metals, metal oxides, and intermetallic compounds. In addition, efforts are also put forth to define catalyst structures in nanoscale by taking advantage of nanostructured materials, which enables the tuning of the catalyst composition and modulation of surface structures and potentially endows more promising catalytic performance in comparison to the bulk materials prepared by traditional methods. Despite these achievements, significant challenges still exist in developing robust catalysts with good catalytic performance and long-term stability. In this review, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in this area, especially focusing on structure–activity relationship, as well as the importance of combining catalytic measurements, in situ characterization, and theoretical studies in understanding reaction mechanisms and identifying key descriptors for designing improved catalysts.

This catalyst was used in the hydrogenation reaction of dimethyl oxalate, and the reaction kinetics was studied. The kinetic experiments were carried out in a fixed bed reactor with a reaction temperature varying from 483 K to 513 K, reaction pressure varying from 1.5 Mpa to 2.5 Mpa, and the weight hourly space velocity of dimethyl oxalate varying from 0.435 h−1 to 0.726 h−1. Eight possible dynamic models were proposed, the optimal model was selected, and the parameters of the optimal model were calculated using MATLAB. The results showed that dimethyl oxalate adsorbed on the active site by dissociation adsorption, and the dissociation adsorption of ester was the rate-controlling step. The parameters of the model were consistent with thermodynamics and statistical analysis, further proving that the model has good forecasting performance.

This research is aimed to convert methane into hydrogen gas through using non‐thermal plasma decomposition. Twenty experiments were conducted, and three parameters were manipulated: voltage of the plasma power source, methane gas flow rate and argon gas flow rate which is streamlined to operate the plasma reactor. The best result was found in the experiment at 3 kV, 8 L/min of argon gas, and 75 mL/min of methane gas, producing 635 ppm of hydrogen gas. The study outcomes were incorporated in a model which highlighted the relationship between the power source voltage, flow rate of argon and methane as a function of the hydrogen produced. Additionally, the results disclosed that other gases, such as carbon dioxide, ethylene, and ethane, were also produced during the decomposition process. The results of this research demonstrate the potential of a novel Multi Flying Jet Plasma Torches reactor for efficient, eco‐friendly hydrogen production through methane decomposition, offering optimized operational parameters and predictive modeling that enhance process scalability and reduce environmental impact compared to conventional methods.

It typically relies on rare platinum group metal catalysts and high temperatures (over 1000 °C). Here, we show that tellurium switches the reactivity of classical methanation-active transition metals (e.g., Co, Ni, Ru, Rh) to selectively promote the RWGS reaction at low temperatures (<450 °C). Te-doped Co and Ni on titania achieve near-equilibrium CO2 conversions with high stability and CO selectivities exceeding 98%, rivaling those of Pt-based systems. Characterization reveals stable alloy formation that suppresses methanation and favors CO desorption. These findings position transition-metal tellurides as alternative catalysts for sustainable CO2 conversion.

The in situ FTIR and steady‐state approach were combined to decouple sequential reactions of DME SR. This study shows a synergy effect in terms of catalytic activity and selectivity of syngas products. Cu–Ni interaction alters physicochemical properties, such as surface chemistry, redox behavior, and acidity balance. As a result, the catalytic trends are influenced by the catalysts' composition. Cu enhances Ni selectivity to CO and H 2 by preventing CO/CO 2 methanation by MeOH intermediate. Meanwhile, Ni‐Cu cooperation centers improve the Ni catalytic overall performance. Interestingly, the bimetallic 3Cu‐Ni catalyst outperforms the stability levels reached with the monometallic formulations for medium‐high temperatures. Moreover, high efficiency in isothermal steady‐state operation was achieved for this catalyst.

This paper provides a review of various pathways for utilising captured CO2 to produce synthetic fuels and green chemicals. The pathways are generally agnostic to the source of the CO2, which mainly affects the purification requirements (such as desulfurisation or deoxygenation). The CO2 is typically converted into CO, which could be achieved by known chemical processes such as reverse water shift and CO2 reforming. The CO and H2 produced from these processes are the building blocks for synthetic liquid products such as methanol, ethanol, jet fuel, diesel, and naphtha. In another variation, the H2 could be generated from renewable energy sources and electrolysis to produce e-fuels from the captured CO2. A review of the current and developing technologies and their technology readiness levels is included to determine their suitability for industrial applications, as well as a high-level discussion on factors impacting their economic viability, such as the differences in compression and other energy requirements, process flexibility, and requirements for intermediate storage buffering. The relative cost differences between the various CO2 utilisation pathways are also presented along with a discussion on suitable cost reduction strategies for each option. Ni-Based Catalysts on Ternary LaCeY Oxide Supports for Dry Reforming of Methane

Formation of active surface depending on yttrium introduction route is studied. Variation of yttrium content allows determining the optimal dopant content (0.5–1.0 mol.% Y) that sustains activity and stability of catalysts in DRM. The most stable Ni/LaCeY(1)O x catalyst shows a decrease of the CH 4 and CO 2 conversions from initial values by 7.05 % and 4.52 %, respectively. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes with open edge Ni particles are dominant carbon species in spent Ni/LaCeY(1)O x catalyst.

In this work, we investigate how single … Silicon carbide (SiC) is a major component of interstellar dust in carbon-rich environments, but its catalytic potential in space has remained largely unexplored. In this work, we investigate how single iron atoms supported on SiC (Fe 0 @SiC) can drive Fischer Tropsch-type (FTT) reactions, transforming the two most abundant gas-phase species in the interstellar medium (H 2 and CO) into more complex organic compounds, i.e., formaldehyde (H 2 CO) and methanol (CH 3 OH). Using density functional theory (DFT), we model the catalytic cycle on the most stable β-SiC (110) surface, revealing that H 2 CO forms efficiently with relatively low activation barriers (up to 18.3 kcal mol −1 ), while, in contrast, CH 3 OH formation faces a significant energy barrier (32.6 kcal mol −1 ) in space. Atomistic mechanistic study highlights the role of Fe 0 @SiC in stabilizing reaction intermediates through Fe-H-Si bridging interactions, which facilitate H 2 activation and CO hydrogenation. Kinetic analysis suggests that H 2 CO and CH 3 OH formation is viable in regions with temperatures above 200 and 350 K, respectively, aligning with observations of formaldehyde and methanol in protoplanetary disks and comets. The findings also suggest that FTT processes could contribute to the formation of other organic molecules, such as acetaldehyde and short-chain hydrocarbons, in space. This work offers new insights into how cosmic dust grains might drive the formation of complex molecules during the planetary system formation.

Their integration as a mixotrophic process enables simultaneous conversion of gaseous and wet waste substrates into medium-chain carboxylic acids and alcohols with high yields and no CO2 emissions. However, in practice, open culture-based processes suffer from low product yields, poor electron selectivity, and a narrow product range. Here, we explore synthetic consortia as a platform to advance one-pot mixotrophic waste conversion to medium-chain oleochemicals. We propose strategies for building synthetic consortia through a top-down, bottom-up approach, leveraging automation and high-throughput microbiology to accelerate bioprocess development. These advances could improve yields, expand waste feedstocks, and produce new chemicals, accelerating carbon-efficient waste upcycling toward industrial adoption while driving the circular economy.

Recent studies on catalysts that contain an inverse oxide/metal configuration have shown very good catalytic performance for the CO2 hydrogenation to methanol process. In this study, we investigated the behavior of indium oxide-Cu(111) interfaces under pure CO2 and CO2/H2 mixtures by using synchrotron-based ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS). Initially, a single layer of copper oxide (CuxO) was grown on the Cu(111) surface by controlled oxidation. On this surface, indium was deposited at room temperature. Oxygen atoms are transferred from CuxO/Cu(111) to the indium metal upon deposition, forming In-O-Cu bonds and active interfaces. Although Cu(111) is not very active for the binding and activation of CO2, the formed InOx-Cu(111) interfaces had no problem adsorbing and dissociating the molecules at room temperature. The reaction of CO2 with H2 on InOx-Cu(111) yielded surface-bound H3CO, CO2δ-, CO3, and CHx species, which are typical intermediates in the production of methanol and other oxygenates. The InOx-Cu(111) interface underwent dynamic chemical changes under reaction conditions, forming In-Cu alloys at low indium coverages (<0.05 monolayer), while at higher indium coverages, a mixture of In-Cu and InOx was detected in XPS. These findings indicate that InOx/In-Cu interfaces can play a key role in processes aimed at the trapping and valorization of CO2.

Dynamic Evolution from Propane to Ethylene over Mordenite Zeolite for Syngas Conversion: Transition from Hydrocarbon Pool to Carbonylation Route

In … Understanding the topology-dependent evolution of reaction intermediates during syngas conversion over an oxide-zeolite (OX-ZEO) bifunctional catalytic system is essential to the development of novel catalysts for regulating product distribution. In this study, we observed a dynamic shift in ethylene selectivity from 14.3% to 80% over time on stream using an unmodified commercial mordenite (MOR) zeolite combined with ZnAlOx. Concurrently, the propane selectivity gradually decreased from 46.9% to 0.3%. We confirmed that this alternative change in reaction time-dependent product distribution was closely linked to the evolution of intermediates, which relied on the accessibility of the 12-ring (R) and 8R pore channels varying with the degree of in situ coke deposition. The methanol-to-propylene (MTP) reaction route within 12R pores predominated the initial reaction phase with methanol as the intermediate, resulting in the formation of propane. Once the 12R pores were filled with MTP-formed coke, the carbonylation route within the 8R pores took over the reaction process. The coke-deposited ZnAlOx-MOR bifunctional system demonstrated stable activity, achieving a high ethylene selectivity of 80% and an ethylene/propylene ratio of 12.7. This study illustrates that in situ coke deposition into the 12R pores of MOR and molecular diffusion behavior are effective methods to enhance ethylene production during syngas conversion over the OX-ZEO catalyst, but there is no need to selectively deactivate the 12R acid sites through the introduction of pyridine.

Plasma pyrolysis, where natural gas passes through the space between electrodes and serves as the working medium, enables high hydrogen yields without emitting carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide. Instead, the primary products are hydrogen and solid carbon. Unlike conventional methods, this approach requires no catalysts, addressing a major technological limitation. A thermodynamic equilibrium model based on Gibbs free energy minimization was used to analyze the process over a temperature range of 500–2500 K. The results indicate an optimal temperature of approximately 1500 K, which achieved a 99.5% methane conversion by mass. Considering the capital and operating costs and profit margins, the hydrogen production cost was estimated at 3.49 EUR/kg. The sensitivity analysis revealed that the price of solid carbon had the most significant impact, which potentially raised the hydrogen cost to 4.53 EUR/kg or reduced it to 1.70 EUR/kg.

This study investigates the performance of Ni-based catalysts on mixed silica and MgO support materials for CO2 methanation. Silica was derived from rice husk (SiO2(RH)), representing a sustainable, cost-effective source for catalyst support, and MgO was used as a reference and to enhance the catalytic activity of the Ni-based catalysts through admixture with SiO2(RH). The results were compared to CO2 methanation over Ni-based catalysts on reduced iron ore from natural siderite (sideritereduced), providing another abundant source for catalyst support. The experiments were conducted in a tubular reactor with a feed gas composition of H2:CO2:N2 = 56:14:30, feed gas flow rates ranging from 4.01 to 14.66 m3·kg−1·h−1 (STP), and reaction temperatures of 548–648 K. The highest CO2 conversion with the Ni/SiO2(RH) catalyst was 39.01% at a methane selectivity of 92.64%. The use of mixed silica and MgO supports (SiO2(RH)/MgO) for nickel revealed a beneficial effect, enhancing CO2 conversion and methane formation. In this case, methane selectivities consistently exceeded 91.57%. Superior methane selectivity and CO2 conversion were obtained with Ni/MgO catalysts and Ni/SiO2(RH)/MgO catalysts with high MgO fractions, highlighting the fundamental effect of MgO in the catalyst support for CO2 methanation.
